Overview 

The productivity and resilience of agricultural systems faces multiple challenges from climate change, growing consumer demand and global trade that facilitates the spread of pests and diseases. You will use cell-free synthetic biology for the identification of important viruses and their vectors with the goal of improving in-field diagnostics and surveillance methods. You will design molecular cascades capable of identifying target species and will experimentally test different designs for their sensitivity and specificity. You will gain hands-on experience in the use of cell-free transcription/translation reactions to broaden the biocomputational potential of these devices and will be trained in mathematical modelling of biological systems and in the use of statistical Design of Experiments. By coupling these skills with the pipetting robotics available in our laboratory, you will rapidly test, understand and optimise device performance. You will take advantage of our expertise in embedding cell-free molecular biology reactions into hydrogels to develop multifunctional materials capable of extracting, identifying and/or discriminating between targets in a single device.

Eligibility Criteria 

You must have, or expect to gain, a minimum 2:1 Honours degree or international equivalent in a subject relevant to the proposed PhD project (biological sciences or a related discipline.) 

Enthusiasm for research, the ability to think and work independently, excellent analytical skills and strong verbal and written communication skills are also essential requirements.  

The studentship covers fees at the Home rate (UK and EU applicants with pre-settled/settled status and meet the residency criteria). International applicants are welcome to apply but will be required to cover the difference between Home and International fees. 

Applicants whose first language is not English require an IELTS score of 6.5 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in all sub-skills.  

International applicants may require an ATAS (Academic Technology Approval Scheme) clearance certificate prior to obtaining their visa and to study on this programme.
