The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Calgary (UCVM) is seeking applicants for a Tier I CIHR Canada Research Chair in “Emerging Viruses and Universal Vaccines”. The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of Associate Professor (with tenure). In accordance with the regulations for Tier I Canada Research Chairs (www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca/home-accueil-eng.aspx), the candidate will be an outstanding and innovative researcher who has demonstrated research success with international recognition in the field of vaccine development for emerging and re-emerging viruses and/or viruses with zoonotic potential. The anticipated start date is October 1, 2024, or a mutually agreed upon date.

Position Description and Associated Responsibilities
The Tier I CRC nominee will have established an internationally recognized and externally funded research program with an emphasis on universal vaccines for emerging and re-emerging viruses. The selected applicant will have demonstrated expertise in viral infection pathogenesis, prevention and control, including, but not limited to, identifying emerging virus spillover from reservoir species, defining pan-viral epitopes and immune mechanisms that elicit broad-protection, designing novel effective universal vaccine candidates and pre-clinical testing of candidate universal vaccines. Social and behaviour factors influencing viral zoonosis, vaccination initiatives and vaccine acceptance should be considered.

The selected applicant is expected to establish a cutting-edge and externally funded research program that is transdisciplinary and potentially complementary and collaborative with current strengths in infection biology research at the faculties of Veterinary Medicine, Medicine, Science and Engineering. There are state-of-the-art core facilities in place, including for research with small and large animal models, various-omics and imaging approaches, and a newly renovated Containment Level 3 facility. In addition to fostering a thriving training program, the selected candidate will participate in undergraduate, DVM program and graduate level teaching.

Position Requirements
• PhD (preferentially in virology, immunology or vaccinology)
• Postdoctoral research experiences in viral disease research with an emphasis on zoonotic viruses
• Demonstrated track record of peer-reviewed publications and sustained external funding, including TriCouncil CIHR, in the fields of zoonotic viruses and universal vaccines for emerging viruses

Applicants at the associate professor rank should be near promotion to full professor. The selected applicant will join the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, with the possibility for joint or adjunct appointments at other Faculties. The research environment is multi-disciplinary and prioritizes transdisciplinary research initiatives. The selected applicant needs to demonstrate an ability and willingness to build connections with investigators across UCVM and the University of Calgary in such initiatives. Experience with lecturing and innovative educational approaches, course development and coordination, and a demonstrated record of impact in undergraduate and graduate teaching will be an asset. The selected applicant will also have opportunities to be involved in administrative and service activities that affect the UCVM community.
