Readiness of construction professionals to maximise effective application of Artificial Intelligence: broadening existing skillsets and capabilities (Ref: ABCE-AS1-24)

Not much research is needed to demonstrate that construction professionals largely lack the advanced digital literacy involved in driving broader use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to fundamentally transform construction processes.

Yet, as AI generally advances, it offers an opportunity for those without any background in computer science or informatics to be involved, regardless of having only a vague notion of what the technology can actually offer. This practice is often referred to as the “no code” development approach where the interaction between those with a technically irrelevant background, and the appropriate AI tools, can generate custom-made and effective solutions.

Candidates applying to this PhD research project will aim to explore the readiness of construction professionals in maximising the value behind interacting with AI tools to develop solutions to their bespoke challenges. By doing so, it paves the way for transforming the skillsets in construction and promoting broader and more effective exploitation of AI in the sector. The project will focus on introducing a conceptual framework for AI-aided no code applications in construction. This involves investigating existing capabilities of construction professionals and ensuring alignment between their skillset and the proposed framework. As a result, the expected implications of the project include providing practice with a capacity to design, develop, and deploy custom-made tools without prior coding knowledge to target and resolve contemporary and evolving construction challenges.
