Position Information 

The NSW Department of Education provides, funds and regulates education services for NSW students from early childhood to secondary school, delivering world-class education through its public schools and providing funding support to non-government schools. We employ, develop and support teachers, leaders and other staff to deliver the best outcomes for students and to advance the wellbeing of Aboriginal people. 

About the Role 

Aboriginal Education Officers provide assistance to teachers, Aboriginal students and their families to support improved learning, welfare and well-being outcomes for Aboriginal students.

Essential Requirements

  • Working with Children Check Clearance
  • First Aid Certificate or willingness to undertake First Aid training
  • Administration of Medications – training to be provided based on student needs.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the Department’s Aboriginal Education and Training policy.

The school has 230 students across 10 main stream classes K-6, 1 Multi categorical, 1 Tutorial Centre (TLC), 1 Suspension centre (Karayuna) and 1 Early Intervention class. Drummond is also the host for the refugee and Ezedi Homework Centres two afternoons per week.

We run unique programs – Learning through Play – a joint research project with the University of New England, an Acara Digital Technologies in focus project, Positive Behaviour for Learning, Coolabah Dynamic Assessment, Breakfast and lunch club and the Iwata creative Arts wellbeing club.

Two English as an Additional Language/Dialect (EAL/D) teachers work with all of the Ezidi and ESL students. They build relationships with teachers and school.. 

We run a Readiness for School program in Terms 3 and 4 to support students coming to school the following year.

Our AEO (Aboriginal Education Officer) works closely with the students and families bridging the gap with education, attendance and school. The AEO works with the teachers when unit planning, ensuring that aboriginal perspective is covered and represented in all learning.

The P&C is small in number though extremely dedicated in providing for our students.

Specific Selection Criteria 

  1. Understanding of the needs of Aboriginal students.
  2. Effective oral and written communication skills.
  3. Knowledge of Aboriginal communities and cultures.
  4. Ability to interact with Aboriginal students and parents.
  5. Experience working as part of a team.
  6. Knowledge of the local Aboriginal community.
