The Refractive Surgery Technician serves as the Refractive Surgery Unit’s resource person within the Ophthalmology Department. Strong communication skills, accuracy and applicability of data are required. The Refractive Surgery Technician provides patient counseling, education prior to refractive surgery, assistance to the physician during refractive surgery, postoperative counseling and results reporting. The Refractive Surgery Technician works with all levels of allied health professionals throughout the Mayo Medical Center Campus.The Refractive Surgery Technician works closely with the administrator, chair of the department and refractive surgery physicians regarding service contracts for equipment, training specialists and documenting department counts. The Refractive Surgery Technician works closely with laser specialists, service reps along with maintaining expert knowledge of the work area and optimizing use of available technology. The Refractive Surgery Technician operates, calibrates, problem solves and maintains all equipment involved in refractive surgery and ancillary testing. The Refractive Surgery Technician works collaboratively with the supervisor as a resource to unit personnel, coordinating staffing and training for the refractive surgery area. The Refractive Surgery Technician may represent Ophthalmology on task forces/committees designing packets, educational material and advertising.

High school diploma or GED required. Familiarity with patient scheduling helpful. Must have interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills. Must have the ability to learn new skills including computer, technical and patient care skills. Wavescan, Intralase and VISX certification required after 6 months of being hired. On the job training provided
