Position Purpose:

The Population Health Data Science Lab at University of Ottawa is a multidisciplinary research team at the forefront of population health data analysis. Our research focuses on utilizing transdisciplinary data analytics to explore health disparities, health services, and unmet health needs. We are dedicated to advancing scientific knowledge and improving population health outcomes through cutting-edge research.

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Research Associate with expertise in biostatistics, machine learning, and health data analysis. The successful candidate will play a key role in leading data-driven research projects, supervising students, preparing grant applications, and managing research budgets. This is an excellent opportunity for a dynamic researcher looking to contribute to impactful health research and work in a collaborative academic environment.

The incumbent will be primarily responsible for the implementation, coordination, evaluation, communication and/or management of research studies.

This is a full time 1-year contract, with possibility of renewal pending performance.

In this role, your responsibilities will include:

Writing up and submitting research results for publication or presentation:

  • Contributes to the drafting and submitting of papers to peer reviewed journals/conferences/workshops and of grant proposals and applications.

Project preparation: 

  • Writes, edits and submits protocols and other required research documentation for research ethics and regulatory matters.

Project management:

  • Welcomes, trains, guides, and supervises undergraduates and graduate students and research staff;

  • Ensures eligibility of project expenditures in accordance with funding agency requirements.

  • Tracks/monitors/provides justification for all financial aspects of the project ensuring accurate and timely reporting (including, if required, travel and in-kind contributions of Principal Investigator and all other partners).

Data Analysis and Interpretation:

  • Conducts sophisticated and/or advanced data analyses which may require specialized expertise and experience (in biostatistics and machine learning on large health datasets, including linked survey) and administrative data, and interprets results.

Project implementation, management and oversight:

  • Applies a variety of research techniques to gather information and research data in the pursuit of research objectives, by directing or carrying out such methodologies as surveys and questionnaires, participant observation, interviews (face‐to‐face, telephone and online), focus groups, literature reviews, internet‐based and library research, document analysis, case studies or other investigative techniques.

  • Assists with any other duties required by the research project or management of the research lab, such as collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to develop innovative research ideas and approaches.

What you will bring:

  • Minimum of an undergraduate degree in a related discipline (in biostatistics, epidemiology, health data science, or a related field); graduate degree is preferred.

  • Two to five years’ experience in research positions or one to two years of research experience with a graduate degree in a relevant discipline.

Other qualifications:

  • Strong proficiency in advanced statistical analyses and machine learning methods using software such as R, Python, STATA, or SAS.

  • Experience working with large health datasets, including survey and administrative data.

  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Strong leadership and communication skills, with a passion for mentoring students.

  • Experience in budgeting and resource management for research projects is highly desirable.

  • Proven track record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals and experience in writing grant applications.

  • Advanced written and verbal skills in English. Bilingualism, spoken and written, is an asset.
