Science/Technology Specialist @ Kennedy Elementary

Primary Purpose:

To facilitate the successful implementation and integration of science and technology into the instructional program and collaborate with Campus and District Instructional Leadership Teams.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor’s degree from accredited university, Master’s degree preferred
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate with required endorsements for subject and grade level assigned
  • Current ESL Certification: ESL Certification required within (2) years of employment beginning with teachers hired in the 2010-2011 school year
  • Meet ESSA Highly Qualified criteria as required by assignment.
  • Meets district minimum requirements for content area staff development (or will meet within one (1) year

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Training/experience in instructional technology preferred
  • Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
  • Strong organizational, communication, interpersonal and time management skills
  • Ability to problem solve collaboratively with various groups

Experience:

  • Three (3) years classroom teaching experience required

One of the primary purposes of this position is to assist in carrying out the district’s goal of improving student achievement by providing assistance to students who are at-risk of academic failure or dropping out of school and/or staff who work with students at-risk of academic failure or dropping out of school.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Provide content development, coaching and instructional leadership for teachers.
  • Assist teachers on effective teaching strategies for the integration of technology with content areas.
  • Serve as a coach to new teachers in all aspects of classroom instruction.
  • Facilitate the selection, purchasing, and use of supplemental materials and resources in collaboration with District Coordinator.
  • Collaborate with Campus & District Instructional Leadership Teams.
  • Keep staff informed as to new program ideas and new software programs.
  • Assist in the alignment and implementation of technology integration at the campus level.
  • Assist campus leaders in making budget recommendations related to appropriate software and hardware products.
  • Assist staff in the writing of grants and proposals.
  • Manage and troubleshoots the network and serve as a liaison with Technology Services and Digital Learning.
  • Serve as a liaison for campus personnel by attending and participating in district level meetings and communicating information/knowledge.
  • Support and communicates the vision of Alief ISD.
  • Abide by the Alief ISD Code of Civility.
  • Maintain an acceptable attendance rate – 94% annually (excluding approved leaves and emergencies).

Instructional Strategies

  • Coach classroom teachers in effective design and delivery of instructional strategies, including corresponding management decisions.
  • Provide guidance to teachers in implementing district curriculum.
  • Assist teachers in developing unit and lesson plans that align with the state and district curriculum, include instructional technology and are differentiated to meet the needs of the students.
  • Work with teachers and staff to determine science and instructional technology goals, objectives, and methods according to district requirements.
  • Assist and provide guidance for the development of appropriate intervention strategies for students at risk of academic failure.
  • Provide guidance for the development of appropriate strategies for differentiation.

Student Growth and Development

  • Manage schedule to maximize time for teacher coaching and learning. An average of 60% of their time should be spent instructionally.
  • Assist the teachers in disaggregating & analyzing data, and determining next steps.
  • Is a positive role model for students; supports the mission of the school district.

Classroom Management and Organization

  • Assist teachers with creating an inviting, risk free, supportive, and warm learning environment in their classrooms that is appropriate to the developmental level and interests of students.
  • Assist teachers in how to manage student behavior in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
  • Assist in the selection of teachers and in determining teacher assignments.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Compile, maintains, and files all reports, records, and other documents required.

Professional Growth and Development

  • Actively seek and participate in science and instructional technology professional growth.
  • Keep teachers informed of current instructional technology staff development; coordinates and presents professional development based on campus and administrator needs.
  • Keep up-to-date with current trends and ideas for content area and technology.
  • Comply with state, district, and federal laws; district and campus regulations and policies for instructional specialists as they exist or may hereafter be amended.
  • Participate in faculty meetings and serves on staff committees as required.

Other

  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Maintain an appropriate level of technology competence to meet the current and future needs of Alief.
  • Implement alternative methods of instruction as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Directs the work of assigned instructional aide(s).

Evaluation:

Performance in this role is evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of Specialists and will be completed by the Principal.

Posture: Prolonged standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting

Lifting: Moderate lifting and carrying (up to 15 pounds); May require occasional heavy lifting and carrying (15-45 pounds)

Environment: Work inside, may work outside; regular exposure to noise

Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; work prolonged or irregular hours
