Job Description
Job Summary/ Purpose: The NP/PA will interact directly with the attending vascular dialysis surgeons, fellow APPs, residents, and hospital-based and clinic-based nurses, vascular laboratory staff, social workers, and continuity of care managers. The Dialysis APP is an integral part of the inter-professional provider team that cares for dialysis access patients to help optimize quality and continuity of care across the care continuum. The APP’s responsibilities will primarily be in the outpatient setting, including clinics for the dialysis access patient population. The APP will evaluate patients with hemodialysis access who are having problems with dialysis such as stenosis, aneurysms, high-pressures or venous congestion and coordinate their management with attendings. They will also evaluate patients for placement of new access and work closely with the care team to optimize access placement. There may be an opportunity to participate in procedures to assist in access management.

Hours per week: 40
Scheduled Work Hours/Shift: Monday- Friday 8am-4:30pm. No weekends or Holidays.

Required Training and Experience
Required Minimum Training: Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as a Physician Assistant or completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as an APRN as noted below.
1. Physician Assistant
or
2. APRN License Type/Certification:
- AGPNP/ANP (Family Practice, Acute Care, Primary Care NP or Adult NP): All patients (1 years to death), stable chronic disease state management or primary care setting.
- FNP (Family NP): (birth to death) Stable chronic disease state management, primary care across the lifespan.
- APRN must have Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) Certification
Required Experience: Exposure during training to surgical training
Preferred Training
Preferred Training: Physician Assistant (PA) or if APRN, License Type/Certification identified below:
1. Physician Assistant
or
2. APRN

Preferred Experience: Preferred Vascular and/or Surgical experience but not required.
Degree of Supervision
Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant will be assigned a Primary Supervising/Collaborating Physician employed by MUSC and will report directly to this physician.
Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations
All certifications must be current and complete prior to start date:
Basic Life Support (BLS).
Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
DHEC and DEA license applications must be started prior to first day.
Job Duties
Provides direct care to patients through the following activities:
- Takes comprehensive history and performs physical examinations
- Evaluates and treats on the basis of history, physical examination, radiological, laboratory, and other diagnostic test results pursuant to the practice agreement or scope of practice guideline
- Performs the following therapeutic procedures in accordance with procedural privileges, skill and proficiency as approved by the Clinical Division Chief
- Dressing changes/wound vac management
- Bedside ultrasound/duplex of AV Access
- Bedside ultrasound/duplex upper/lower extremity Arterial and Venous systems
- Initiates referrals to other health care providers, and/or consults with the attending physician or the collaborating physician
- Documents and bills for direct care provided
- Utilizes current research and evidence-based decision-making in all clinical practice
- Performs and participates in quality/performance improvement activities and clinical research
- Participates in and supports accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization
- Demonstrates responsibility for professional practice through active participation in professional organizations and continuing education
- Potential to precept students at MUSC enrolled as an advanced practice provider student; and facilitates the learning of other new team members
- APRN or PA must maintain licenses, certifications, CNEs/CMEs, etc. as required by applicable policies and state law
- First assistant capabilities – setup of OR, closure of operative wounds, pre- and post-operative notes and order placement
- Travel to clinics in the metro Charleston area for clinic/surgical responsibilities
- Keeping current with literature surrounding dialysis access care and techniques
- Ability to interpret EKG and Echocardiograms to assess heart function to determine appropriate anesthetic needs for procedures
Physical Requirements
Continuous requirements are to perform job functions while standing, walking and sitting. Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, fully use both hands and legs, possess good finger dexterity, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, reach in all directions. Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and as required. Maintain 20/40 vision corrected, see and recognize objects close at hand and at a distance, work in a latex safe environment and work indoors. Frequently lift, lower, push and pull and/or carry objects weighing 50 lbs (+/-) unassisted, exert up to 50 lbs of force, lift from 36″ to overhead 25 lbs. Infrequently work in dusty areas and confined/cramped spaces.
Additional Job Description
Graduation from an approved Physician Assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or its predecessor agencies. Must be licensed in the state of South Carolina, and certified as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required, either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.
