Provide students with special needs learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Develop or modify curricula and prepare lessons and other instructional materials to student ability levels.

  1. Collaborate with students, parents, and other members of staff to provide effective programs for all students
  2. Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned
  3. Work cooperatively with general education teachers to modify regular curricula as recommended in the IEP
  4. Prepare and implement goals and objectives recommended in student’s ARD/IEP meeting
  5. Conduct assessment of student learning and use results to plan for instructional activities and evaluate student progress
  6. Use technology in teaching/learning process to enhance student learning and progress
  7. Provide or supervise personal care, medical care, or feeding of students as recommended in student’s IEP
  8. Manage behavior using positive behavioral supports
  9. Utilize crisis intervention strategies and/or physical restraint as recommended in a student’s IEP
  10. Provide interventions recommended by the Response to Intervention (RtI) team to general education students
  11. Share responsibility in implementation of RtI model which may include instructing general education teachers in special education techniques, providing small group/individualized interventions, assessing student progress weekly and maintaining data collection
  12. Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students
  13. Maintain open lines of communication with parents
  14. Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members
  15. Use effective communication skills; present information accurately
  16. Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills
  17. Maintain confidentiality
  18. Other duties assigned

ASSIGNMENTS TO VIRTUAL INSTRUCTION:

  1. Seamlessly integrate District-approved online learning platforms and required software into the planning, delivery, and support of virtual instruction.
  2. Plan, prepare, implement, and evaluate lessons and activities during the standard work hours of the campus at which the teacher is assigned, as well as prolonged or irregular hours.
  3. Be able to communicate with students, parents, and campus and District personnel during the standard work hours of the campus at which the teacher is assigned, as well as prolonged or irregular hours.
  4. Adhere to all professional responsibilities and deadlines including professional communication and responsiveness.
  5. Be flexible, responsive, and positive with students, parents, and staff.
  6. Effectively translate CISD Best Practices into the virtual instructional setting.
  7. Regularly attend and apply District-approved professional development in the most up-to-date practices associated with virtual instruction.
  8. Accurately and timely obtain and report required student data, including attendance, grades, etc.
  9. Dress professionally as you would if you were offering instruction to students in a traditional, in-person setting.
  10. Teach and interact with students from a quiet space, free from distraction, where appropriate confidentiality rules can be followed.
  11. Create a virtual classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
  12. Provide small group and tutoring opportunities for students who are experiencing difficulty in their learning.
  13. Support any extracurricular activities for which you are responsible according to District guidelines.
  14. Attend all required campus and District meetings.

Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor’s degree from accredited college/university
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate for special education
  • If an individual is providing content instruction in a special education classroom setting, a valid certificate that matches the subject and grade level of the assignment is also required, or the individual must demonstrate competency through the state’s 2010 and 2011 high objective uniform State standard of evaluation for elementary and secondary special education teachers
  • Valid ESL certification

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Knowledge of special needs of students in assigned area
  • Knowledge of Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process and Individual Education Plan (IEP) goal setting process and implementation
  • Knowledge of curriculum and instruction for assigned area
  • Training in Crisis prevention and behavior intervention strategies
  • Training in strategies for positive behavioral supports

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Paraprofessional, if assigned.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, and pulling. Move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom or adaptive equipment. May be required to lift and position students with physical disabilities; control behavior through physical restraint; and assist non-ambulatory students. Exposure to biological hazards.
