Job Description 

General Description:

The primary responsibility of a faculty member at NOVA is to provide quality instruction. NOVA faculty are expected to excel in teaching strategies and classroom management that fully engage students in a classroom, laboratory, online platform, and/or clinical environment and engage students in individual conferences and related activities. NOVA faculty help students develop their interests and abilities to their fullest capacity in order to build stronger citizens within the community. All faculty must be available to teach day, evening, and weekend classes at any of the College’s campuses or off-site locations.

This faculty position will be accountable for teaching courses in pediatrics nursing, health assessment, foundations, , for pre-licensure nursing students. The position also involve the direct supervision of students in pediatric clinical settings, as well as foundations. The major emphasis shall be on good teaching by working with students in classrooms, laboratories, individual conferences, and related activities to help the student develop their interests and abilities to their fullest capacity to become a safe beginning clinical nurse.

Duties and Tasks:

Full-time teaching faculty members are responsible for teaching courses offered in traditional, hybrid, and distance learning formats. Full-time 9-month teaching faculty positions carry a normal teaching load of 12-15 credit hours and 15-20 contact hours per semester. Faculty members also serve as faculty advisors, serve on division/campus/college committees, participate in curriculum development, and maintain currency in their discipline.

Essential Functions:

NOVA faculty are expected to meet assigned classes regularly; submit required records and reports in a timely manner; teach the courses using established texts; conduct requisite student conferences; hold required office hours; attend to assigned divisional and college duties; contribute to the development of the program of instruction; adhere to the statement on professional ethics in accordance with college policies, procedures, and regulations; answer emails in a responsible fashion; maintain current competence in the particular discipline or field of specialization; and advise students.

Employees must reside in Virginia, Maryland, or the District of Columbia.

Special AssignmentsMay be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA’s/Required QualificationsKSAs:

  • Ability to teach pediatric nursing concepts in classroom, campus lab and clinical agencies
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Competent in the use of a computer, Power Point, Word, E-mail; and blackboard platform.
  • Excellent organizational skills .
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence,
  • The ability to work in a collegiate manner with a highly diverse faculty, staff and student population
  • The ability to teach in an urban community college setting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the effective use of instructional technology, including learning management systems like Canvas.
  • Ability to provide direct supervision of students in pediatric clinical settings, as well as foundations.

Required Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in Nursing awarded by a regionally accredited institution.
  • Unencumbered Virginia license as a registered nurse.
  • A minimum of 2 years of full-time or full-time equivalent related experience that includes clinical experience in pediatrics and teaching (didactic) experience in a college or university setting. Part-time experience will be converted to its full-time equivalent.
  • Current CPR certification for Healthcare Providers
  • All immunizations are up to date.

Additional ConsiderationsAdditional Considerations:

  • Doctoral degree in nursing awarded by a regionally accredited institution.
  • Significant experience teaching/supervising ADN nursing students in a clinical setting.
  • Significant academic experience in such areas as classroom teaching, online teaching and/or curriculum development in a community college setting.
