Research outline:

Rail transport plays a critical role in passenger travel and freight in the UK. The UK rail infrastructure and networks are facing many challenges due to climate change and increased requirements for safety, durability, resilience and sustainability. Real-time non-destructive inspection of early-age fatigue damage in railway track foundations is necessary to reduce the requirement/cost of maintenance and facilitate the achievement of net zero railways. The aim of this PhD project is to develop a novel non-destructive approach to real-time sense the early-age fatigue damage in railway track foundations using smart materials, electrical modelling, intelligent sensing technologies and laboratory testing.
