Part-time teachers are paid per teaching hour. Part-time teachers are hired per term (3 months). If the service delivered is satisfactory and depending on the demand, they can be hired for the following term or a future term.
Duties and Responsibilities
Background: The Language Training Programme (LCP) of the Center for Learning and Multilingualism (CLM), Office of the United Nations at Geneva (UNOG), promotes linguistic balance and multilingualism within the Secretariat and improves the language abilities of staff, as mandated by the General Assembly in its resolutions 2480 B (XXIII), 43/224D and 50/11. To do so the LTP offers language courses in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish. A total of 14 language teachers, all of them staff members, are distributed across the six language programmes in the LTP to actively work in the development and the assessment of language skills offers aligned with organizational goals and priorities, and according to General Assembly mandates, UN policies and instructions on learning, and the Secretary General´s recommendations on multilingualism. To attend the large demand of language learning these language teachers are unable to cover, the LTP needs to hire additional teachers as individual contractors on a part-time basis. The number of contractors to be hired varies depending on the demand. The duties of part-time language teachers are to promote multilingualism and to help staff develop more effective work-related language skills in any of the six official languages. For the part-time English teacher, these duties include the following: 1. Teaching English general language courses and specialized courses, either in person or online. 2. Preparing classes, developing and updating learning materials, in accordance with the curriculum established by the LTP, as well as preparing, monitoring and testing the devices and software required to support class delivery in any format. 3. Administering and updating the CLM language learning platform (Moodle). Setting up, verifying and technically maintaining the course, monitoring student activity and results in autonomous activities, uploading the post-lesson content. 4. Providing group and individual feedback on student progress as well as advice on ways to develop their linguistic skills. 5. Administering, assessing and grading tasks, tests and exams, applying UN language standards. 6. Carrying out the administrative duties directly related to their teaching, such as setting up the online courses, maintaining student attendance and grading records and communicating with students as needed. 7. Attending meetings, collaborate with colleagues and participating in group work sessions.
Qualifications/special skills
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in language area studies, language teaching, applied linguistics, communication or education/pedagogy or related area is required. Degrees with special emphasis on the theory and practice of teaching a second or foreign language to adult learners are desirable. A first-level university degree in combination with six years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Post-degree training in second or foreign language teaching is highly desirable. A minimum of four years of experience teaching English as a foreign or second language to adults in a multi-cultural setting (corporate, academic or other professional setting), is required. Of these, at least three years of recent experience in curriculum development, language examination design, and/or language teacher training is required. Experience using a variety of e-learning tools, learning management systems (i.e. Moodle) and online collaboration tools to teach a second or foreign language is desirable. Experience at an international level in a multicultural environment is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Expert level of competence in English (oral and written) according to the UN Language Framework (https://hr.un.org/page/un-language-framework) is required. Knowledge of French is required. Knowledge of other UN official languages is an advantage.
Additional Information
Part-time teachers are paid per teaching hour. Part-time teachers are hired per term. If the service delivered is satisfactory and depending on the demand, they can be hired for the following term or a future term. The contract does not include medical insurance nor pension allowance. Classes are held in the Palais des Nations in Geneva or online either from 8 to 9.30 a.m. or 12.30 to 2 p.m. twice a week per course. The programme contains a mandatory online component of one hour a week in addition to the three face-to-face hours (delivered in-person or virtually). Part-time teachers will be assigned between one and three courses (for a maximum of 12 teaching hours per week).
