School of Optical and Electronic Information, Huazhong University of Science and Technology
Ⅰ. Overview of the School of Optical and Electronic Information, HUST
Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) is a comprehensive research university located in Wuhan, China under the direct supervision of the Ministry of Education. It is a participant university of the former “985” Project in China, and also one of the first universities approved under the national “Double First-Class” Initiative, China’s “Excellence Initiative” for institutions of higher education.
The history of the School of Optical and Electronic Information (SOEI) can be traced back to the Optical Instrument Teaching and Research Group and Laser Research Group of the Department of Mechanics 1 established by the Huazhong Institute of Technology (now the Huazhong University of Science and Technology) in 1971. The school started the professional development of laser and optoelectronics earlier in China. In the late 1990s, Professor Huang Dexiu of SOEI wrote to the authorities of Hubei Province and Wuhan City to offer his suggestions and promote the construction of “Optics Valley of China”. He was known as the initiator of “Optics Valley of China, Wuhan”. SOEI is responsible for the construction of “Optical Engineering”, which is classified as a first-class national key discipline. Since 2018, SOEI has consistently secured the top spot in the Shanghai Ranking for the discipline of “Optical Engineering” within China, and it has continued to uphold its dominant position within the nation. In 2017 and 2021, the discipline of “Optical Engineering” was chosen to be part of the national construction of Double First Class disciplines, in the first and second rounds, respectively. HUST proposed to build a “first-class discipline group of optoelectronic information” with a focus on optical engineering and the proposal has been approved by the Ministry of Education.
