ORGANIZATION SUMMARY
World Relief is a global Christian humanitarian organization whose mission is to boldly engage the world’s greatest crises in partnership with the church. The organization was founded in the aftermath of World War II to respond to the urgent humanitarian needs of war-torn Europe. Today, organizational programming focuses on humanitarian and disaster response, community strengthening and resilience, and refugee & immigrant services and advocacy.
POSITION SUMMARY:
World Relief seeks an English Instructor to help refugees and immigrants through leading our Cafe English Program where students will learn the basics of English, from speaking simple survival phrases to building basic numeracy and literacy skills, thus fostering self-sufficiency. This part time position is for 5 hours per week.
This is a limited-term position funded through a grant agreement until 10/31/25 and contingent upon funding extension.
ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Instruction: Prepare and teach 1-hour conversational English class on Mondays and Wednesdays for recently arrived adult refugee and immigrant language learners to build English communication skills for employment, community navigation, and social connection.
- Adapt teaching methods to meet the needs of clients from diverse cultural/linguistic backgrounds with a wide range of skills, educational abilities, and attitudes.
- Connect students with English language learning resources to supplement language acquisition outside of class.
- Attend staff meetings to collaborate on developing more effective programming for clients.
- As necessary and possible, adjust existing curriculum and teaching to meet clients’ stated objectives.
- Create an encouraging and supportive environment that fosters learning, confidence, and courage.
- Maintain student sign-in sheet.
- Work with San Diego Volunteer Coordinator, to create weekly conversational prompts for volunteers to lead small conversational groups after class.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Mature and personal Christian faith
- Committed to the mission, vision, and values of World Relief
- Desire to serve and empower the Church to impact vulnerable communities
- Able to affirm and/or acknowledge World Reliefs Core Beliefs, Statement of Faith, Christian Identity and National Evangelicals For the Health of The Nation document
- Fluency in written and spoken English.
- Confident and capable of navigating across digital platforms, including Microsoft Office Suite, Zoom, and WhatsApp.
- Hold a valid US driver’s license.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher, ideally in Education, TESOL, or a related field.
- At least 2 years’ teaching experience in education, ESL, and/or literacy.
- Hold current CA Adult Education Teaching Credential (or be in process of obtaining credential).
