Position Information St Ives High School is a comprehensive coeducational high school with an enrolment of approximately 1500 students, with some 40% of these from non-English speaking backgrounds.

The school has a high potential and gifted education program; a Hearing Support and Autism Unit; and a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) program operates across all year groups. It also has strong links to the Northern Sydney Intensive English Centre, which is located on the same site. The community has high expectations for student involvement and achievement and the school has a strong wellbeing ethos in supporting students from diverse backgrounds and identities.

The position sits within the Languages/EALD faculty, a strong faculty offering multiple languages with Spanish offered across all cohorts and at multiple course levels in Stage 6. The school completes its mandatory 100hr study of a language in Year 7 and from Year 8 courses become electives; therefore, development of strong rapport and highly engaging programs and sequences of lessons is encouraged. Furthermore, the faculty regularly organises both local incursions, excursions and annual overseas trips. The position is roughly 80% Spanish and 20êLD; however, depending on the selected candidates experience this can be somewhat adjusted.

The EALD component of the position requires team-teaching of English language syntax and vocabulary specific to support the needs of students learning across faculties and staff should be prepared to adjust materials for mainstream teachers and be present teaching language-based facets of classes across Science, History/Geography and/or including Stage 6 courses. Depending on experience of selected candidate, we also run parallel mainstream English syllabus classes for EAL/D cohorts in all year groups 7-12, including running the Preliminary and HSC EAL/D English course. We also offer tutorial style classes for EALD students in a number of senior subject areas, supporting their English language development as related to that specific subject area.

Specific Selection Criteria

  • Approval to teach Spanish and approval to teach English as an Additional Language/Dialect, in particular ability to deliver English syllabus for EAL/D parallel classes.
  • Ability to design and teach highly engaging and differentiated programs to meet the needs Spanish language students, including those at High Potential and Gifted Education level or those with additional learning needs.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of the various technologies and techniques used to assist English as an Additional Language or Dialect learners.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills with the capacity to initiate, collaborate and work as a dynamic member of the faculty and wider school, in particular in promoting languages in the wider school community.

Conditions An unconditional full approval to teach is a requirement. If you do not hold a full approval to teach with the NSW Department of Education, you are required to commence the application process at the same time as you apply for this teaching opportunity.

Special Notes Applicants are to include details of their WWCC clearance number as part of this application.
