We believe great substitute teachers deserve recognition and ways to advance into a career in education. Syracuse substitute teachers earn $130-$150 per day, depending on location (see “Compensation” below). Many of our substitutes continue to grow and develop in becoming certified teachers that are hired in Syracuse City Schools. Those certified in teaching will be considered for long-term substitute positions.
Job Overview
The Substitute Adult ESL Instructor is responsible for providing instruction to adult English language learners in the absence of the regular classroom teacher. The substitute instructor will create a positive and supportive learning environment that encourages student participation and language acquisition. They will utilize effective teaching strategies and adapt lessons to meet the diverse needs of adult learners.

Specific Duties
Reporting to the ESL Site Facilitator and acting as the teacher for the day, the Substitute Teacher must, at a minimum:
- Report to the front office at beginning of school day to pick up required materials/schedule of classes and at the end of the school day to return materials
- Implement lesson plans provided by the regular ESL classroom teacher.
- Deliver instruction in all aspects of English language acquisition, including reading, writing, speaking, listening, and grammar.
- Adapt teaching methods and materials to accommodate different learning styles and levels of English proficiency.
- Create a welcoming and inclusive classroom environment that respects cultural diversity.
- Employ a variety of instructional techniques, such as interactive activities, group work, and technology integration.
- Monitor student progress and provide constructive feedback.
- Maintain accurate attendance records and other required documentation.
- Collaborate with program staff and other substitute teachers.
- Adhere to all school policies and procedures.
- Follow all school and classroom procedures
- Perform other related duties as directed by Facilitator
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, TESOL, Linguistics, or a related field preferre
- Interest in serving Syracuse City adult learners
- Ability to accept daily assignments in various SCSD Adult ESL Programs
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and classroom management skills.Ability to work with diverse populations and individuals from various cultural backgrounds.
- The successful candidate will be required to pass a fingerprint-based background check, at the cost of $102.50 to the candidate.
