Primary Purpose:

To help students learn content and/or skills that will contribute to their development as mature, able and responsible men and women.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate
  • ESL Certification preferred or ESL Certification required within two (2) years of employment beginning with teachers hired in 2010-11 school year
  • Current first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation )CPR), and automatic external defibrillator (AED) certificate

Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Knowledge of overall operation of instrumental music program
  • Knowledge of curriculum and instruction
  • Knowledge of state and UIL policies governing band
  • Able to manage budget and personnel
  • Able to instruct students and manage their behavior
  • Able to interpret data
  • Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills

Experience:

  • Student teaching or approved internship and band directing experience

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Instructional Strategies

  • Plan and teach a program of study in accordance with the Alief Instructional Model, the philosophy and the curriculum of the school district.
  • Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students.
  • Establish and communicate clear objectives for all instruction in order to achieve curriculum goals.
  • Employ instructional methods and materials that are most appropriate for meeting curriculum goals and stated objectives.
  • Continue to assess the accomplishments of students, keep appropriate records, give immediate feedback and provide progress reports on a regular basis.
  • Diagnose the learning disabilities of students seeking the assistance of district specialists as needed or required.
  • Counsel with colleagues, students and/or parents on a regular basis.
  • Develop reasonable rules for classroom behavior and maintain order in the classroom.
  • Assist administration in implementing policies and rules governing student life and conduct.
  • Maintain professional competence through in-service education provided by the district and self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Supervise pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working hours.
  • Participate in curriculum development programs and selection of textbooks as required.
  • Participate in faculty committees and sponsorship of pupil activities.
  • Coordinate and implement a program of instruction for the Marching Band. Half-time performances and UIL marching competition are required.
  • Coordinate and implement an extra-curricular instruction for students to participate in solo/ensemble UIL competition.
  • Coordinate and implement an extra-curricular program of instruction for students to participate in District, Region, Area, and All-State TMEA events.
  • Accompany students to TMEA rehearsals and events including District, Region, Area, and All-State.

Classroom Management and Organization

  • Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
  • Manage student discipline in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
  • Accompany and supervise students on out-of-town trips activities and arrange transportation, lodging, and meals for out-of-town events.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

Communication

  • Establish and maintain a professional relationship and open communication with parents, students, colleagues, and community members.

Professional Growth and Development

  • Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
  • Comply with federal and state laws, State Board of Education rule, UIL rules, and board policy in the band area.

Other

  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Maintain an appropriate level of technology competence to meet the current and future needs of Alief.
  • Implement alternative methods of instruction as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Evaluation

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of teachers, the Texas Teacher Evaluation and Support System (T-TESS), and the extra-curricular assignment evaluation.

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals

Posture: Standing, prolonged sitting, occasional kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing pulling, and twisting

Motion: Repetitive hand motions; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching; may also require climbing stairs and reaching over head

Lifting: Moderate lifting and carrying (up to 15 pounds); May require occasional heavy lifting and carrying (15-45 pounds)

Environment: May work prolonged or irregular hours; frequent districtwide travel; all campuses are temperature controlled with hard surface floors

Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress
