mRNA is often drawn as a linear molecule in textbooks but this could not be further from the truth in vivo. In this project we will utilize a newly developed single molecule technology to understand the structure of mRNA in human cells (Nature 609 p394). We will investigate how proteins package mRNA as it is produced in the nucleus and subsequently exported through the nuclear pore to the cytoplasm.
The project will provide a multidisciplinary training in mammalian molecular biology and the applicant will join a well resourced group within the Sheffield Institute for Nucleic Acids (SINFoniA: https://sites.google.com/sheffield.ac.uk/sinfonia/home). For recent work from the lab see https://doi.org/10.1038/s41467-024-46278-9 and http://doi.org/10.1016/j.molcel.2019.04.034
The project will be supervised by Prof Stuart Wilson, Drs Ian Sudbery and Matt Newton. For informal enquiries please contact Prof Stuart Wilson: [email protected]
