Waukegan Community Unit School District No. 60 serves nearly 15,500 students in preschool through grade 12 and is located halfway between Chicago, Illinois and Milwaukee, Wisconsin on the shores of Lake Michigan. The District has one early learning center, 15 elementary schools, five middle schools and a high school program divided between two 9 – 12th grade campuses. The District encompasses portions of Waukegan, Beach Park and Park City.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Implement instructional services for students identified as English Learners aligned with the District’s curriculum and consistent with research based practices and school and District improvement plans. This includes, but is not limited to, individualizing instruction, lesson planning, grading, assessing acquisition of English language skills, establishing a classroom environment conducive to learning and use and supervision of assigned educational support staff. Collaborate with and provide consultation to teachers and building administration in support of EL students in the general or special education classrooms or in meetings. Represent the Bilingual Department in building and District initiatives and the communication of Department standards and expectations. Maintain and expand knowledge of effective practices in teaching students with diverse backgrounds and English Learners. Participate in work related activities and programs required of teaching staff. Commitment to the District’s guiding belief statement.

The Elementary ESL teacher will be directly responsible to the building principal for all matters pertaining to the operation of the school plan, in-building administrative and personnel procedures, and general or district-wide policies. The successful candidate will be indirectly responsible to the Director of Bilingual and Multicultural Education for all matters pertaining to curriculum, instructional methods, assessment and materials as well as building assignment.

Responsibilities:

  1. Provide a personalized instructional program that is compatible with the abilities, needs and learning characteristics of each English Learner student in a pull out environment;
  2. Support prescribed curriculum and assessment scaffolding for English language proficiency as necessary;
  3. Create homogeneous groups of students to target English Language Acquisition
  4. Create a student-centered learning environment;
  5. Employ creative methods of instruction and utilize a variety of materials within the structure of the designated curriculum;
  6. Become acquainted with the characteristics, needs, and abilities of each child through personal interaction and by seeking information from psychoeducational reports, hearing and vision reports, staffing notes, end-of-the-year student status reports, etc.;
  7. Inform the building principal whenever a student’s attendance is unsatisfactory;
  8. Provide the building principal with an up-to-date copy of activities that the teacher is following when requested;
  9. Maintain up-to-date lesson plans;
  10. Use the designated methods of reporting student progress to parents;
  11. Attend specified in-service meetings and required professional learning;
  12. Collaborates with and provides consultation to teachers to support needs of EL students
  13. Meets with classroom teacher regularly to collaborate and inform classroom teacher of students’ language abilities based on the WIDA standards and the Can-Do descriptors
  14. Provides ESL grades on ESL report card for students served
  15. Administer WIDA assessments to EL students served
  16. Use and supervise teacher aides or helpers, in accord with the designated job descriptions;
  17. Act as communication lead for bilingual department to EL teachers at respective site assigned to
  18. Attends regularly scheduled professional development specifically for ESL teachers held by the Bilingual Department 4-6 times per year, minimum of one per quarter.
  19. Instruct and respond in an appropriate manner with ethnically diverse students;
  20. Serve as EL representative at IEP meetings when needed.
  21. Perform such other professional duties as may be assigned by the building principal or the Director of Bilingual and Multicultural Services.

Qualifications: Must have a valid Illinois Professional Educators License with an ESL endorsement.
