Oregon State University Cascades invites applications for a full-time 1.00 FTE, 9-month, fixed-term, Assistant Professor of Teaching: Mechanical Engineering position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Senior Associate Dean.
This position is located in Bend, Oregon.
As an Assistant Professor of Teaching at Oregon State University-Cascades, the responsibilities of this position consist of teaching undergraduate courses related to engineering design theory and methodology; establishing and/or continuing a limited amount of independent research; and/or conducting research on teaching and pedagogy; working with students on undergraduate research projects; serving on departmental, college, and University committees; and providing professional and community service.
This fixed term professorial rank requires a doctoral-level degree, emphasizes excellence in teaching beyond instruction, and includes a percentage of FTE devoted to research and scholarship. It couples dominant duties in for-credit instruction with duties related to curricular design and development and/or pedagogical strategies and practices. Consistent with the emphasis of this rank, assigned research and scholarship are likely to relate to pedagogy.

Key Responsibilities
75% Teaching and Advising: Develop and teach courses for OSU-Cascades, consisting of a mix of courses: large and small, and potentially, a mix of modalities. Consult with the College when necessary to coordinate development and deployment. Advise students in projects; conduct student assessments, including proper documentation to support ABET accreditation; hold office hours; and mentor and advise students on professional aspects of the field.
15% Research and scholarly activities: Conduct and direct academic and/or applied research; seek extramural funding, advise student research projects, publish in recognized peer-reviewed journals and conferences relevant to engineering education or engineering design theory and methodology, and present at professional meetings.
10% Service: Participate as a collegial member of the unit and perform appropriate service that contributes to the effectiveness of the Campus, School, the College, the University, and the profession. Service includes participation in and leadership of Campus, School, College, and University committees, attendance at faculty meetings, mentorship of junior faculty, and contributions to outreach activities. Participation in service to the profession, including serving as a consultant to Industry partners, reviewer or editor for journals and conferences, leadership roles in professional organizations, reviewing proposals, and conference organization, should be pursued as appropriate.
What You Will Need
- PhD in mechanical engineering or other relevant discipline in engineering prior to the position start date.
- Demonstrated ability or significant potential for excellent teaching.
- Research experience in mechanical design and/or design theory and education.
- Proven oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated practice of holistic consideration of equity, inclusion, and social justice throughout techniques used to apply research learnings to create a compelling learning experience and fostering an inclusive and collaborative environment for faculty, staff, and students
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
What We Would Like You to Have
- Experience teaching a range of courses in mechanical engineering and/or engineering design
- Experience mentoring undergraduate research
- Industry experience and/or a commitment to engaging with industry.
- A history of securing sponsored research
- Current or future research topic(s) that is/are aligned with the university strategic plan, Prosperity Widely Shared
- Interest or track record in commercialization of research
