This project will focus on the development of digital twins for various modules of a wastewater treatment plant, leveraging advanced computational and modelling techniques. A digital twin is a virtual representation of a physical system that provides real-time insights and simulations for optimising performance. The goal of this PhD project is to create robust digital models that mimic the operations of key wastewater treatment processes, enabling a detailed investigation into energy consumption patterns, resource recovery mechanisms, and system efficiencies. By integrating real-world operational data into these digital twins, the research will provide a platform to test and implement innovative strategies for enhancing energy efficiency and minimising waste.

This project is at the forefront of addressing the critical intersection of water and energy systems, tackling global sustainability challenges in the context of wastewater management. Through the digital twins, candidates will explore new technologies, such as advanced anaerobic digestion and resource recovery techniques, to maximize the recovery of valuable by-products like biogas and nutrients. The ultimate aim is to optimize wastewater treatment plants to operate as energy-efficient and resource-positive facilities. This research will have significant implications for the development of future-ready wastewater systems, contributing to circular economy goals and sustainable infrastructure development.
