The Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary invites applications for the position of Department Head, Electrical and Software Engineering. This is a key leadership position within the Schulich School of Engineering (SSE). The Department Head appointment is a five-year term, renewable and subject to review. The successful candidate will be offered a tenured academic appointment at the Professor level.

The Department of Electrical and Software Engineering is an inclusive, supportive community of educators, researchers, and students. The Department is an integral part of the diverse and growing technology community in Alberta and beyond. Research programs in the Department provide innovative technology solutions for the hyperconnected world, sustainable energy systems, intelligent software systems and One Health. Our research programs are collaborative and engage a wide range of industrial partners. Our students are provided with strong technical foundations, encouraging creativity and problem solving through hands-on experiences and continual innovation in our educational programming.

The Department Head will be a strategic leader, a passionate advocate for electrical and software engineering, and an accomplished researcher and academic. The Department Head is responsible for fostering a culture that stresses inclusion, transparency and vision. We are seeking a candidate who has achieved excellence in their career and has the potential to be an effective leader and advocate for the department. The successful candidate must guide the department in the context of the University’s strategic plan Ahead of Tomorrow, the ii’ taa’poh’to’p Indigenous Strategy, the Institutional Sustainability Strategy, and the Faculty’s Strategic Plan Schulich Momentum, while interacting with industry, government, and the broader community on a regular and sustained basis to promote the department.

Candidates must have a strong track record of research and teaching in Electrical and/or Software Engineering or a related field and meet the requirements for appointment at the Professor rank. It is required that the Department Head will have earned a PhD degree in Electrical or Software Engineering or a closely related discipline and either is registered as a Professional Engineer in Canada or is eligible to be registered as a Professional Engineer in Alberta.

Vision for the Department (maximum 2 pages): your 5-year vision for the department with respect to research and educational activities, along with your ideas to support engagement and enablement of faculty and staff, with the goal of building consensus and unity in the department.
Statement and evidence of your leadership style and decision-making approach (maximum 2 pages).
Statement of research interests, accomplishments and vision (maximum 2 pages)
Statement of teaching philosophy, evidence of teaching effectiveness (maximum 2 pages)
Statement on equity, diversity and inclusion (maximum 2 pages)
