Optimising wheat-fungal symbioses for enhanced nutrition and sustainability

The global challenge of meeting food demand, particularly under the pressures of climate change, necessitates the optimization of crop nutrient uptake while minimizing resource inputs. Mycorrhizal fungi, notably arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi, have been widely studied for their role in enhancing plant nutrient acquisition in exchange for carbon. However, recent research highlights the potential role of Mucoromycotina ‘fine root endophytes’ (MFRE), a less-explored group of fungi, in crop nutrient uptake.

This PhD project offers an exciting opportunity to investigate how MFRE can improve nutrient uptake in wheat, one of the world’s most important staple crops. MFRE, alongside AM fungi, play a crucial role in helping plants access nutrients from the soil. However, the extent to which wheat cultivars can form beneficial associations with MFRE remains largely unexplored.

This project will focus on three key research questions:

1. Is there variation in the degree to which different wheat cultivars are colonised by MFRE based on disease resistance and fertiliser responsiveness traits?

2. Are there cultivar-specific differences in the functional significance of MFRE associations?

3. Is there functional complementarity between AM fungi and MFRE symbionts in wheat roots?

The student will conduct controlled experiments with different wheat cultivars, testing how these cultivars respond to inoculation with MFRE, AM fungi, or both. Field trials will be used to explore real-world applicability, while cutting-edge techniques such as isotope tracing, microscopy, and metabolomics will reveal how these fungi enhance nutrient acquisition in crops. The results could lead to new strategies for improving crop nutrient efficiency, reducing reliance on chemical fertilisers, and increasing the nutritional quality of wheat. The student will gain hands-on experience with advanced laboratory and field techniques, as well as benefit from interdisciplinary collaboration with leading experts in plant-microbe interactions, molecular biology, and sustainable agriculture.

Funding: A tax-free annual stipend at the standard UKRI rate (£19,237 for 2024/25 entry), research costs and tuition fees at UK rate

How we allocate:

Shortlisting will take place as soon as possible after the closing date and successful applicants will be notified promptly. If you’re shortlisted, you’ll be invited for an interview on a date to be confirmed in February 2025. You’ll be notified as soon as possible after the interview dates whether your application has been successful, placed on a reserve list or unsuccessful. If you are successful, you’ll be required to confirm your intention to accept the studentship within 10 days.

Terms and conditions:

The studentships are fully funded for four years, and you must complete your PhD in four years.

You’ll receive the UKRI minimum doctoral stipend per year for your living costs, which is paid to you in regular instalments. The UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) stipend is tax free and does not need to be paid back.

International students will need to have sufficient funds to cover the costs of their student visa, NHS health surcharge, travel insurance and travel to the UK as these are excluded from UKRI funding.
