About IRRI
The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) is dedicated to reducing poverty and hunger through rice science; improving the health and welfare of rice farmers and consumers; and protecting the rice-growing environment for future generations. IRRI is an independent, nonprofit, research and educational institute, founded in 1960 by the Ford and Rockefeller foundations with support from the Philippine government. The institute, headquartered in Los Baños, Philippines, has offices in 17 rice-growing countries in Asia and Africa, and over 1,000 staff.
Working with in-country partners, IRRI develops advanced rice varieties that yield more grain and better withstand pests and disease as well as flooding, drought, and other harmful effects of climate change.
Job Purpose
Under the guidance of Researchers and/or Scientists, routine field, screen house, and laboratory operations including field preparation and maintenance, crop management, plant sampling as well as harvest and post-harvest seed processing, and laboratory analyses.
This position will be based at the IRRI Headquarters, Los Baños, Philippines and may only be filled by permanent citizens of the Philippines.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Execute agreed protocols for routine field, screen house, and laboratory operations including field preparation and maintenance, crop management, plant sampling as well as harvest and post-harvest seed processing, and laboratory analyses
- Provide timely, consistent and accurate information to direct supervisor to ensure that research objectives and SOPs are followed
- Support researchers and scientists in establishing laboratory and screen house experiments
- Prepare materials and lay-out and ensure proper maintenance of experiment operations, as required by the institute and government protocols including maintenance of storage and preparation of supplies, property and material inventory, cleanliness, orderliness and safety, preparation of commonly used buffers and reagents in the laboratory as well as fertilizers and chemicals in the screen house, and proper waste disposal
- Collect data and ensure correct encoding
Qualifications
- High School Graduate with at least 1 year of relevant experience in field or laboratory work
Skills Required
Mandatory
- Experience in rice production
- Experience managing experiments in the field, screen house, greenhouse, laboratory
Preferred
- Basic knowledge in MS Office programs
- Basic knowledge in rice breeding
- Basic understanding of transgenic research biosafety protocols
