Ophthalmic Assistant – Cornea and Refractive Surgery – Full Time
Nebraska Medicine is seeking an experienced Ophthalmic Assistant to join our Cornea and Refractive Surgery team at our Truhlsen Eye Institute (TEI). You will support both clinical and surgical functions, assisting with patient preparation, diagnostic testing, and refractive surgery procedures in a fast-paced, patient-centered environment. Key duties include conducting visual acuity and pressure tests, refracting patients for optimal vision, and assisting with laser vision correction surgeries. You will work alongside a skilled team of doctors to deliver high-quality care to patients undergoing vision correction treatments, with opportunities to expand your skills, including the chance to learn to operate laser equipment. Weekly Location Split:
- Village Pointe TEI: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday
- Main Campus TEI: Wednesday, Friday
Schedule:
- Days: Monday to Friday
- Hours: Typically 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM (flexible based on surgery schedule)
- Earlier Shifts: 6:30 AM – 2:30 PM on surgery days
- Surgical Cases: Mondays, Tuesdays, and most Thursdays

Duties: Ophthalmic Assistant – Cornea and Refractive Surgery
Provide administrative, technical, and quality patient care support to an ophthalmologist/optometrist in a clinical setting. Delivers on daily objectives to assist with meeting patients’ needs. Communicates information to patients and others within the care team.
Required Qualifications: Ophthalmic Assistant – Cornea and Refractive Surgery
- High school education or equivalent required.
- Completion of an accredited Ophthalmic Assistant course OR completion of one year of post-secondary education in an allied health field OR one year of experience in a healthcare setting required.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (BLS with skills assessment or approved BLS) within six months of hire required, must be from an American Heart Association (AHA) endorsed program (effective for new hires starting January 1, 2023 or later).
Preferred Qualifications: Ophthalmic Assistant – Cornea and Refractive Surgery
- Prior experience in ophthalmic or optometric office preferred.
- Completion of an accredited ophthalmic assistant course preferred.
- Certification as an ophthalmic assistant, technician or technologist preferred.
- Once certification is achieved, it is required to be maintained.
