Department Summary

The Department of English is the largest academic department at UNT with over fifty full-time faculty members. We strive to promote a greater understanding of literature and culture; to add to literary tradition by fostering new works of poetry, fiction, and non-fiction; to innovate in writing instruction; and to investigate the history of persuasive writing. English boasts a vibrant graduate creative writing program, including the robust Visiting Writers Series, the annual Rilke Prize in Poetry, and American Literary Review, along with the larger literary scene in the Dallas/Fort Worth area that offers the Dallas Literary Festival hosted by the Dallas Public Library, the Dallas Museum of Art’s Arts & Letters Series, as well as readings and events at independent bookstores such as Interabang Books, The Wild Detectives, and Deep Vellum. We also house First-Year Writing, which serves approximately 7,000 undergraduate students per year.

UNT has a highly diverse campus with a wide range of languages spoken in addition to English. We welcome candidates who have experience with HSI/MSIs and/or who speak Spanish, Vietnamese, American Sign Language, Chinese (Cantonese, Mandarin and other variations), Arabic, Tagalog, Farsi, French, or/and Yoruba.

Position Overview

The Department of English at the University of North Texas invites applications for a Director of the UNT Writing Center. The Director will hold a full-time appointment in the Department of English as a Lecturer. The typical workload of the successful candidate will be: 50% Administrative, 40% Teaching, and 10% Service. Teaching load is negotiated with the department, but typically the Director will teach two courses per long semester. The Director will receive 1.5 months of summer salary, (which may be prorated in the first year, depending on the start date), and the position is supported by a full-time administrative assistant. Ideally, the appointment will begin between July 1 and August 1, 2025 and no later than September 1, 2025. In AY24, the Writing Center held over 3,000 individual consultations with students from over 100 areas of study in all 11 colleges at UNT. The Director oversees two staff members, 27 undergraduate student tutors, and 2 MA students.

Minimum Qualifications

PhD (or MFA) in English, Composition Studies, or related field. Experience and expertise in writing center theory and administration, and demonstrated knowledge of best practices in the field. Demonstrable excellence in teaching college writing and/or undergraduate writing courses, or in teaching in other writing programs. Outstanding interpersonal and organizational skills, and demonstrated ability to work well in a team-oriented environment. Preparedness to teach at a Majority Minority and Hispanic-Serving institution.

Preferred Qualifications

Evidence of excellent administrative performance in a college or university writing center; evidence of effective management and mentoring of student employees; experience with budget management; and experience teaching undergraduate courses in Rhetoric and Writing studies, including Rhetorical History and Historiography, Modern Rhetorical Studies, intermediate/advanced Studies in Writing, and British Literature.
