Job Summary

Do you have experience in bid-writing and fundraising? Have a passion for history, science, and heritage, and their ability to inspire? The Royal Gunpowder Mills is seeking a seasoned fundraiser to pursue fundraising opportunities for both current operations and future conservation and development.

Job Description

The Waltham Abbey Royal Gunpowder Mills is an extraordinary 175-acre heritage site situated in the Lea Valley Park. For 300 years, it was the UK’s major explosives factory and shaped military history. Closed down by the Ministry of Defence in the 1990s and reopened as a visitor attraction, today the site boasts more than 20 listed buildings and preservation as a Scheduled Ancient Monument and Site of Special Scientific Interest.

Thanks to support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the Royal Gunpowder Mills is embarking on a process of transformation to reinvigorate its public offer while developing a mixed-use business model.

We seek to commission an experienced fundraiser who can pursue fundraising opportunities for both current operations and future conservation and development. Reporting to the Chief Executive and working alongside the Business Development Officer, you will focus on applications to public sector bodies and trusts/foundations that support heritage and culture sites.

We expect this role will require 2-3 days’ work per week on average for the period of the contract (March 2025 to June 2026) and that it will be fulfilled on a freelance contract basis, but are open to appointing it as a part-time employee as well. The maximum available budget for the commission is £36,000.
