Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) Vienna, Bonn, and Beijing. The incumbent will work under the direct supervision of Scientific Affairs Officer, United Nations Platform for Space-based Information for Disaster Management and Emergency Response ,UN-SPIDER Vienna.The UN-SPIDER programme is achieving this by focusing on being a gateway to space information for disaster management support, by serving as a bridge to connect the disaster management, risk management and space communities and by being a facilitator of capacity-building and institutional strengthening, in particular for developing countries. UN-SPIDER is being implemented as an open network of providers of space-based solutions to support disaster management activities. Besides Vienna (where UNOOSA is located), the programme also has an office in Bonn, Germany as well as an office in Beijing, China.For more information on UNOOSA, please visit: www.unoosa.org Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual”s background; the intern”s assigned office as well as the internship period. Duties may include, but are not limited to: • Provide support to the team in organizing UN-SPIDER conferences, events and workshops. • Assist in the planning for training activities and technical advisory missions. • Provide assistance in formatting documents such as concept notes, agenda, background papers, badges etc. • GIS/Remote sensing research. • Support with content and maintenance of the UN-SPIDER Knowledge Portal. • Support with ongoing communication materials such as publications, news stories, user stories, brochures etc. • Perform other tasks as necessary. The internship is UNPAID and interns work five days per week (full time – 40 hours) unless other arrangements are requested during the interview and agreed to by the hiring office. Remote work is possible based on arrangement with the Head of Office.
The basic education required is HS Diploma. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have recently completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have recently completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work.experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Experience in GIS and/or remote sensing Experience using graphic design tools (e.g., Canva or similar) Familiarity with Disaster Risk Management and a strong interest in disaster risk reduction and early warning systems Proficiency in standard computer software applications Experience in organizing events such as trainings and workshops Experience with Content Management Systems is considered an asset Be computer literate in standard software applications; proficiency in preparing spreadsheets Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
