Job Summary

We are seeking a Freelancer to develop and pilot a storytelling session that will run as part of the Little Stars programme, with support from the Astronomy team. A fee of £1,412 is available for the development and piloting of this programme.

Job Description

We are looking to improve our offer for families at the Royal Observatory. With this in mind, we are creating Little Stars, a programme where families with children under the age of 7 can partake in an assortment of fun, memory-making activities based on the Royal Observatory’s collections, heritage and themes. These events will be delivered as part of a weekday and weekend programme and will include:

a social club for carers of toddlers and babies,

and a storytelling session, incorporating music and movement, role play, sensory play, exploration and elements of relaxation.

We are working to create a safe and welcoming space for families and carers of very young children. Our activities will involve the whole family.

In addition to the regular Little Stars programming, we will have annual Toddler Takeover Days. Variations of the workshops designed for the Little Stars programme will be pulled together as a suite of activities to run for the day. Families will come together to play, have fun and meet other families in the same stage of their family life. The idea is that the event will bring all the fun of a family party but with a twist – the toddlers are in charge for the day!

Within this project you will:

  • Create a programme from scratch, leaving your mark on the brand-new family programming at the Royal Observatory.

  • Be part of a major once-in-a-generation redevelopment.

  • Develop something around the Royal Observatory’s themes, collections and heritage.

  • Work at a World UNESCO Heritage site.

  • Use creativity to build a fun, engaging and inclusive programme for families with young children that stimulates the imagination and encourages participation.

A fee of £1,412 is available for the development and piloting of the Little Stars programme. This is equivalent to four full working days, with the distribution of work to be decided in collaboration with the successful applicant.

Job Requirements

  • Has previous experience working in public engagement aimed at families with young children, including experience with vulnerable adults / children / families.

  • Has proven experience developing and/or producing family programmes with a focus on storytelling.

  • Is organised, collaborative, and confident communicating with families and community partners.

  • Brings enthusiasm, creativity, and empathy to community working.

  • Is available to attend key planning meetings (a hybrid of online and in-person) and piloting sessions (in person at Greenwich).
