Job Summary

The Composition program in the School of Humanities at the University of Southern Mississippi invites qualified applicants for two full-time, 9-month, non-tenure track, Assistant Teaching Professors or Instructors (depending on qualifications) in English Composition. Teaching Track positions at USM are renewable with opportunities for promotion, and access to professional development travel funds. The teaching load is 4/4, with opportunities for summer teaching. These positions will always include first-year writing instruction, but faculty may also have opportunities to teach advanced undergraduate composition courses and introductory courses in literature. Candidates with an MA by the time of appointment will be considered at the rank of instructor-level faculty; candidates with a PhD will be considered at the rank of Assistant Teaching Professor. The full-time appointment begins August 2026.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Teach first-year and advanced composition courses, including introductory courses to literature, in both conventional and online formats
  2. Pursue professional development opportunities
  3. Contribute to program development and assessment
  4. Advise and mentor undergraduate students
  5. Fulfill service obligations appropriate to teaching-track faculty
  6. Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

MA in Rhetoric & Composition or English with strong teaching experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of computers and appropriate teaching technologies

Preferred Qualifications

PhD in Rhetoric & Composition or English by the time of appointment.

Research, professional development, or teaching experience that adds to our composition faculty’s strengths in composition, professional writing, and basic writing.

Experience teaching in both conventional and online formats.
