Urban and Inner-City Studies is an interdisciplinary program that takes a place-based and community-engaged approach to studying cities. We combine a critical urban studies focus with courses that look at various aspects of inner cities, such as urban Indigenous experiences, immigration, urban poverty, housing, the leadership of women and 2SLGBTQ+ people, and community organizing, planning and advocacy. We offer a unique and exciting curriculum that connects theory and practice and prepares students to take on complex issues of social, political, economic, and spatial justice.

The Department of Urban and Inner-City Studies provides an opportunity to study cities in creative and experiential ways from our location in Winnipeg’s North End. Classes are offered at 541 Selkirk Avenue, in Merchants Corner. Here, students experience a welcoming and caring environment that values relationship and multiple ways of knowing, where students are supported and challenged to put their learning into action. Degree options include a 3-Year BA, a 4-Year BA, a Minor and a two-year certificate.

We invite applications for a 1-year-term position Instructor at the rank of Instructor III, beginning July 1, 2026. The successful candidate will have a minimum of a Master’s degree in a relevant field of study with demonstrated teaching and community experience. We welcome applications from individuals who will strengthen our program’s commitments and approach, and who have experience teaching students who face multiple barriers.

The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses that include Community Development, Introduction to Community Advocacy, Community Organizing for Social Justice, Confronting Racism and Oppression, and Introduction to Urban and Inner-City Studies.

While the position has a start date of July 1, teaching will begin in the Fall term (September 2026).

Applicants are requested to submit a complete application that will include (all documents in PDF):
