PhD in rhetoric, professional writing, teaching or related field. The required degree must be completed by the start date.

Experience:

Required

  • Current collegiate-level in-person teaching record in rhetoric, composition, or education.
  • Evidence of professional development in field.

Preferred

  • Experience teaching multiple types of composition including first-year writing, writing about humanities, persuasive writing, writing for education majors, writing in the social sciences, and technical communication.

Duties/Expectations:

  • Teaching (70% of time)
    • As a professional position, this ten-month annual contract expects the following teaching load: 8 courses/year, with a typical teaching assignment of 4 courses fall semester, 3 courses winter semester, and 1 course spring or summer term.
    • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in writing or rhetoric.
    • Teach core English program and general education courses.
    • Teach with intentionality to build faith in Jesus Christ and testimony of His restored gospel.
    • Teach students to read critically, think analytically, and write persuasively.
    • Commit to innovative teaching focused on student growth and lifelong learning.
  • Professional Development (10% of time)
    • Participate in professional development, engagement in the field’s research, and implement best practices.
  • Citizenship (20% of time)
    • Serve on department, college, and university committees, as well as in professional organizations.
    • Participate in faculty meetings and other academic discussions.
    • Advise students on both formal and informal areas (academic, career, etc.).
    • Support the mission of the English Department and Brigham Young University.
    • Support student faith through obvious commitment to the religious expectations of the sponsoring institution, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

If hired, must reside in the state of Utah and teach in-person classes.
