Art for Tolworth: Co-creation artist commission for Tolworth Hospital – Secondary Arrival

Rather than simply commissioning artworks for predefined spaces, we are seeking creative responses that can help shape the identity, atmosphere and everyday experience of the hospital through art, collaboration and making.

Across the building, a series of creative opportunities will respond to different places and experiences, from moments of arrival and orientation to shared social spaces, wards, circulation areas and outdoor courtyards. These opportunities will intentionally operate at different scales and in different ways. Some may result in significant permanent artworks, while others could involve artist residencies, changing collections, digital work, participation or creative interventions that develop over time.

The Secondary Arrival provides a second significant opportunity for permanent artwork within Art for Tolworth.
Located at the secondary entrance to the new hospital, the commission centres on another prominent double-height space and provides an opportunity to establish a distinctive creative presence at an important point of arrival and movement through the building.

We are looking for an artist or creative practitioner to develop an ambitious permanent artwork that creates a strong visual anchor and contributes meaningfully to the identity and atmosphere of the hospital.

The secondary entrance remains the focal location for the commission. There is also an opportunity for the artwork to establish relationships with adjacent circulation, the central spine and other connecting or shared spaces.

While distinct from the Primary Arrival commission, the Secondary Arrival forms part of the same connected creative programme. We are not looking for the two commissions to share a particular visual language or aesthetic, but are interested in how each can contribute to a coherent experience of Art for Tolworth.
