2025 Summer Intern – Synthetic Molecule Analytical Chemistry (SMAC), Synthetic Molecule Pharmaceutical Sciences (SMPS)

Department Summary

The Small Molecule Analytical Chemistry department develops control strategies, analytical technologies, and characterization methods for therapeutic candidates to advance programs to pre-clinical and clinical studies.

This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site.

The Opportunity

• Develop and optimize analytical methods including various one-dimensional and two-dimensional chromatography separation methods for quantification of pharmaceutical polymers.
• Establish structure-property relationship between polymer physical chemical properties and chromatography separation mechanisms.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to improve method applicability in various formulation modalities, method sensitivity, and generality.
• Attend lab and technical trainings, design and conduct experiments.
• Present results and scientific findings to stakeholders, cross-functional teams, and at department meetings.

Program Highlights

• Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.
• Program start dates are in May/June (Summer)
• A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.
• Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.

Who You Are (Required)

Required Education: You meet one of the following criteria:

• Must be pursuing a PhD Degree (enrolled student)
• Must be pursuing a Masters Degree (enrolled student)
• Must be pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree (enrolled student)
• Required majors: Chemistry, Materials Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Bioengineering, or related.

Required skills:

• Knowledge of polymer chemistry and chromatography separation (i.e. reversed phase, size exclusion chromatography)
• Hands-on experience using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and/or size exclusion chromatography (SEC)
• Knowledge of data analysis tools such as JMP, Matlab, Python
• Understanding of detection techniques physical principles (e.g., charged aerosol detection, mass spectrometry, multi-angle light scattering detection)

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $23.00-$45.00 hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job- related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
