Position SummaryThe Academic Advisor plays a crucial role within the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts, operating under the office of the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs. This position provides equity-focused academic advising and essential support for a diverse caseload of students. The Advisor’s responsibilities include guiding students through their academic journeys by offering insights on major requirements, General Education (GE) courses, university policies, study abroad options, transfer processes, and graduation requirements. Additionally, the Advisor assists students facing challenges such as retention issues, probation, disqualification, unsatisfactory academic progress, and withdrawals. The Advisor connects students with campus resources and facilitates initiatives that promote academic progression and overall student success.Key Responsibilities:

  • Academic Advising: Provide comprehensive academic advising on major requirements, General Education (GE), university policies, study abroad opportunities, transfer processes, and graduation requirements.
  • Student Support: Assist students facing retention challenges, including probation, disqualification, and unsatisfactory academic progress, as well as guide them through withdrawals and related statuses.
  • Resource Connection: Connect students to campus resources to promote holistic development and academic success.
  • Community Development: Cultivate a strong sense of community and belonging.
  • Initiative Facilitation: Facilitate programs and initiatives that support student progression towards degree completion.

  • This is a part-time (16 hours per week), temporary position anticipated to end on June 30, 2025, with the possibility of reappointment.
  • This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation.
  • Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Thursday, 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
  • The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Department SummaryThe College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts (PSFA) is one of eight instructional units of San Diego State University. The College is comprised of ten diverse departments and schools: the departments of Aerospace Studies, Military Science and Naval Science; the schools of Art, Design and Art History, Communication, Hospitality and Tourism Management, Journalism and Media Studies, Music and Dance, Public Affairs, and Theatre, Television and Film as well as ten research centers. The College is staffed by 49 positions comprised of administrative, clerical, and technical staff in addition to approximately 260 tenured/tenure-track faculty and lecturers serving over 5,000 majors.The Dean’s Office is responsible for the creation, implementation, and continued support of the instructional, research, and development processes in the College.At San Diego State University, we are a community of diverse individuals who have and represent many perspectives, beliefs, and identities. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master’s degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience.Key Qualifications

  • Ability to use standard office computing tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google applications, email), and social media (Instagram, YouTube, etc.)
  • Ability to develop and deliver training and education workshops.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and coordinating programs and events.
  • Ability to exercise discretion, confidentiality, and excellent judgment in responding to sensitive issues and situations in an academic advising context.
  • Ability to assess, design, implement and evaluate effective programming and policies.
  • Ability to work well independently and follow through on projects with minimal direction.
  • Ability to use initiative to plan and implement program activities and improvements.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of barriers for underrepresented students.
