ADJUNCT FACULTY – ENGLISH AND SPEECH, PART-TIME

TRUMAN COLLEGE

Harry S Truman College, one of the City Colleges of Chicago, is seeking talented, dynamic adjunct instructors in English and Speech with a commitment to motivate and empower a diverse group of students for the Fall 2024 semester and beyond. Ideal candidates would have the appropriate Master’s degree. Those with teaching experience in developmental education and literacy instruction are encouraged to apply. Candidates must also be open to participating in departmental summative assessment (such as writing portfolios).

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teach assigned classes
  • Maintain office hours to assist students outside of class
  • Design courses to meet learning outcomes, and promote students’ active participation in their own learning.
  • Collaborate with a mentor, department chairs, and other faculty for course planning, record keeping, and assessment of student work
  • Encourage our students to develop the successful habits and critical thinking skills they will need to be successful in college and beyond

In addition, our department offers opportunities for paid professional development, and many of our adjunct faculty find work in the Writing and Reading Center.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • English: M.A. in English Language or Literature or 18 graduate hours in English, Literature, Creative writing, Composition/Rhetoric, or print journalism.
  • Reading: M.A. in Reading or M.A. in Linguistics or M.Ed. in Adult Literacy ­Reading or MA and 15 graduate hours in Reading or M.S.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction (with an emphasis on Literacy/Reading) or M.A. plus verifiable evidence of active enrollment in NIU’ s graduate certificate in reading.
  • ESL: M.A. in TESOL or Linguistics; M.Ed. with a specialization in ESL/Bilingual Education and ISBE ESL endorsement with five or more years of experience may be considered.
  • Speech: M.A. in Communications or Speech or Theatre Arts.
  • Previous teaching experience is preferred.
  • Experience with a diverse, multi-lingual student population is desired, as is a commitment to the open access mission of the community college.
  • Knowledge of a Learning Management System preferred.
