The Department of English and Literature is seeking to hire part-time (adjunct) instructors to teach in-person first-year writing courses (English 1010 and 2010). Successful candidates will be able to implement program goals as guided by common assignment sequences, texts, and objectives; prepare effective course plans; establish a supportive classroom environment; evaluate student learning using multiple means of assessment; support a student-centered approach to education; maintain and submit detailed student grade records. Applicants must be Utah residents at the time of hire.

If hired for the position, Adjunct Instructors must perform their UVU work within the boundaries of the state of Utah.

Summary of Responsibilities

The successful candidate will perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Design and teach first-year writing courses (English 1010 and 2010).
  • Plans, prepares, and follows an approved course of study that includes measurable objectives for each course taught.
  • Prepares instructional materials (course outlines, syllabi, exams, mock-ups, visual aids, and instruction sheets) as necessary.
  • Instructs, manages, and supervises individual and groups in classrooms and laboratories through using appropriate teaching methods.
  • Evaluates instruction and learning by means of appropriate testing methods.
  • Maintains a student-oriented approach to education.
  • Recommends students for advancement and graduation.
  • Maintains and submits accurate and current reports and records involving student accountability, attendance, performance, and follow-up.
  • Coordinates cooperative work experience programs and students as assigned.
  • Assists counselors, department chairperson and or program coordinator, faculty, and department staff in maintaining an effective program.
  • Thoroughly familiar with the academic freedom and professional responsibility statement and adheres to these policies.
  • Maintains desirable and safe laboratory and classroom conditions.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree or higher in English, Rhetoric and Composition, Creative Writing, or a closely related field.
  • A minimum of two years’ experience teaching at the college level.

Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of subject area and engagement with pedagogical principles.
  • Experience teaching first-year college writing.
  • Skill in instructional strategies, techniques, and relevant technologies.
  • Ability to manage, motivate, and evaluate students.
  • Effective interpersonal, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.

  • Part-time: waives 100 percent of tuition and general student fees for up to 3 credit hours or 1 course after 6 consecutive months of employment and a minimum of 480 hours worked (dependents do not qualify)
  • Adjunct: waives 100 percent of tuition and general student fees for one course per semester in which there is an active teaching assignment at the university (dependents do not qualify)
