Cape Fear Valley Medical Center located in Fayetteville, NC, is part of Cape Fear Valley Health System, which serves communities throughout southeastern North Carolina. The private, nonprofit healthcare system is North Carolina’s eighth-largest health network. Facilities include Betsy Johnson Hospital, Bladen County Hospital, Central Harnett Hospital, Highsmith-Rainey Specialty Hospital, and Hoke Hospital. The system also encompasses Behavioral Health Services of Cape Fear Valley, the Cape Fear Valley Rehabilitation Center, and several medical clinics and offices in the region. Annually, it serves approximately 1 million patients.

Leadership

Francis Abdou, MD, serves as Regional Vice President for Clinical Services for the Mid-South region (NC/TN/SC). Prior to joining NAPA, he served as Market President for the same territory for Mednax American Anesthesiology.

Francis has been a practicing anesthesiologist for over 30 years. He completed his residency in anesthesiology and a Pain fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, in Boston, MA. He has a BA from Hamilton College and received his MD from SUNY, Upstate Medical University.

In addition to his clinical practice, Francis has served in a variety of leadership roles, including, most recently, Medical Director for the Raleigh Anesthesiology practice (AANC).

Requirements

Responsibilities

• Assist in the directing and coordinating of activities in the Anesthesia Department
• Responsible for the medical management of patients who are rendered unconscious and/or insensible to pain and emotional stress during surgery and other medical procedures
• Pre-anesthesia assessment
• Obtains and/or verifies patient consent
• Discuss anesthetic options and risks with the patient Induction, maintenance, and emergence from anesthesia
• Monitoring of the patient’s physiological condition
• Performance of clinical intervention as needed

Requirements

• M.D./D.O. Degree from an accredited College of Medicine
• ECFMG and FLEX
• Completion of approved residency in anesthesia
• Currently licensed as a physician
