Artist in Residence (x4), Now Then! (Sherburn In Elmet)

This call out is for individual artists, who will be supported by an early career or emerging practitioner (see our separate call out for support practitioners), a Creative Engagement Producer and Now Then!’s Creative Programme Lead. Working together with our partnership and communities in Sherburn, we’ll make exciting things happen, together.

4 Residencies in Sherburn will take place simultaneously, with artists working directly with communities to engage participants in their art form. The residencies will build to and include co-creating work with participants which explores stories relevant to Sherburn and its people. Co-created work will be presented at an outdoor arts festival in Sherburn, on either Saturday 16 or Sunday 17 August 2025.

Artist Residencies will be based in:

• 1 x Residency at Athelstan Community Primary School
• 1 x Residency at Sherburn Hungate Primary School
• 1 x Residency at Sherburn High School
• 1 x Residency in the community, working with adults (this will involve Sherburn and Villages Community Library, The Old Girl’s School and other organisations working with adults in Sherburn).

Art Forms

We are open to working with a range of arts forms and genres, including (but not limited to):

• Contemporary Theatre
• Contemporary Dance
• Contemporary Music
• Digital Arts
• Contemporary Visual Arts, Crafts and Installation
• Contemporary Circus
• Spoken word, Creative Writing and Poetry (for performance or artistic presentation using visual arts)
• Cross-Arts

The work we co-create together must be produced to be presented in an outdoor, greenfield setting. This includes building green and ecologically responsive practices into our processes, and care will be taken to not harm or endanger any wildlife or nature.

Artists should have hands on experience co-creating participatory and ambitious projects with communities. They will need an understanding of what it means to make work for outdoor settings and/or site specific settings.
