Job Description

About SYCOMORE

SYCOMORE is a global platform that brings together artists and scientists to address the world’s most urgent environmental challenges. Artists create powerful visual interpretations of scientific problems, and the proceeds from art sales are channelled directly to scientists working on solutions to those same issues.

Our mission is simple:
Turn art into funding for real environmental impact.

No other organisation fuses creativity, science, and measurable ecological action in this way.

The Role;

SYCOMORE is seeking exceptional artists from all disciplines to create artwork inspired by environmental topics such as:

  • Forests and deforestation

  • Oceans and marine ecosystems

  • Endangered species

  • Climate change

  • Soil degradation

  • Eco-waste and pollution

  • …and many other themes tied to scientific research

Artists will collaborate with SYCOMORE’s scientific network and produce artwork that will be sold as originals and prints. The majority of revenue funds environmental solutions, while artists receive:

  • A baseline project fee for commissioned work

  • Paid opportunities for new artworks

  • Ongoing royalties from print sales

  • Brand collaboration opportunities with companies seeking meaningful environmental partnerships

This role offers international exposure, impact-driven creative work, and fair compensation above typical Arts Council expectations.

Job Requirements

Applicants should have:

  • A strong artistic portfolio demonstrating high-quality, original work

  • Ability to create conceptually rich pieces aligned with environmental themes

  • A desire to use art to drive real-world ecological impact

  • Professionalism, reliability, and ability to meet agreed deadlines

  • Openness to interpreting scientific topics (no scientific background required)

  • Experience in digital, fine art, illustration, mixed media, or other professional artistic mediums

Both emerging and established artists are encouraged to apply, provided the quality of work meets SYCOMORE’s high standard. Depending on experience and the quality of art work, payments will range between £290 – £340 per day. We expect a minimum of 2 days per month to be worked on some projects. More longer term project will require approximately 5 -10 days work per month.

Job Responsibilities

  • Create artwork inspired by scientific problems identified in collaboration with SYCOMORE

  • Interpret broad environmental themes into compelling visual narratives

  • Work with SYCOMORE’s team to prepare artwork for exhibition, digital presentation, and print production

  • Participate in optional events, exhibitions, or gallery openings where artists and scientists discuss the work

  • Maintain communication with SYCOMORE during project creation

  • Respect SYCOMORE’s mission and the purpose-driven model of using art to fund environmental solutions
