Position Summary

Assistant/Associate Professor of Teaching Biomedical Engineering

The Biomedical Engineering Department at the Herff College of Engineering University of Memphis is seeking qualified applicants for an Assistant/Associate Professor of Teaching position. This is a twelve-month, non-tenure track appointment. The Assistant/Associate Professor of Teaching will contribute to undergraduate education but may have opportunities to contribute to graduate education primarily at the Memphis campus, though teaching at off-campus sites or virtually may be required. Teaching in the summer and advising undergraduate majors in the Biomedical Engineering Program on their curriculum may also be required.

The typical teaching load is 3 to 4 courses per semester, depending on other service activities. All candidates able to contribute to instructional excellence in our undergraduate program are encouraged to apply. We are especially interested in candidates who can teach in two or more of the topic areas; a) introductory and senior capstone design for medical devices including FDA regulatory processes, b) MATLAB and applications including biostatistics and medical measurements, c) physiological systems/modeling, d) medical instrumentation, e) biomechanics, f) biomedical manufacturing and f) potentially new electives of personal interest.

The Herff College of Engineering at The University of Memphis has undergraduate and graduate programs which are nationally ranked. The Department offers the B.S. degree in Biomedical Engineering through the University of Memphis and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees through a joint program at the University of Memphis and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. There are currently seven tenured/tenured track faculty in the program on The University of Memphis campus, five on the University of Tennessee Health Science Center campus, and approximately 180 students pursuing their B.S. degree and 37 pursuing their graduate degrees. All degree programs offer flexibility to focus academic and research studies in subspecialty areas of: (1) Biomechanics, (2) Biomaterials and Regenerative Medicine; (3) Biosensors; (4) Electrophysiology; and (5) Imaging. Programs of study may also be tailored to help prepare students for medical, dental, veterinary, and other professional degree studies. Our faculty are known for both their contributions to science and engineering and their shared passion for teaching and inspiring students to explore and discover new ways to improve the quality of life and keep people healthy.

The city of Memphis is an attractive location in Tennessee and is world-renowned for its music, food, and hospitality. Memphis is home to three Fortune 500 companies (FedEx, International Paper, and AutoZone) and over 50 medical device and life science companies including Medtronic Spine & Biologics, Stryker -Trauma & Extremities, Microport Orthopedics, and Smith & Nephew Orthopedics. The Herff College has many partnerships with these and other local industries for both research and education applications.

Candidates must have a strong commitment to undergraduate instruction and curriculum development. Experience teaching biomedical, chemical, or related engineering courses and developing biomedical engineering curricula in an ABET/EAC accredited program is preferred.

The anticipated start date is 18 August 2025. Applicants with a PhD from an accredited institution either in Engineering or a closely related scientific field are desired. A master’s degree in engineering is the minimum requirement. Experience in college teaching and curriculum development in engineering is desired.
