University of Alberta

The University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, in partnership with Alberta Health Services (AHS) invites applications for a tenure-track position of Assistant/Associate Professor within the Division of Pediatric Cardiology in the Department of Pediatrics, with a focus on Pediatric Heart Function and Transplant. This position is a 1.0 full-time equivalent and includes negotiated and committed protected time for research and other academic pursuits.

The University of Alberta Medical School is a Top 4 Canadian university, serving 40,000 students with more than 14,000 faculty and staff. The University of Alberta and the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry have world class research programs with integration and collaboration opportunities in all types of research including basic sciences and clinical trials. The Stollery Children’s Hospital Cardiac Program is the 9th largest in North America in surgical volumes. It is one of the two largest centers in Canada, providing care for much of Western Canada. The chosen candidate would join 18 clinical and 3 associated research scientists providing a full spectrum of clinical pediatric cardiology services and research, with expertise in multi-modal diagnostic imaging, interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, fetal cardiology, heart failure, cardiac transplantation, and preventive cardiology. In addition to clinical care, the Division of Pediatric Cardiology is active in teaching at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels (undergraduate and postgraduate students, residents and clinical/research fellows). The Division has a fully accredited Pediatric Cardiology subspecialty-training program through the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada with numerous core cardiology trainees and 7-10 subspecialty fellows matriculating within the Division each academic year. The Division has a thriving research program encompassing initiatives within areas of clinical diagnostics and innovation, basic/translational, health services and population science.

The Pediatric Heart Transplant Program has been providing care for children from Western Canada since 1986 and has progressively evolved into one of two leading programs in Canada performing 10-15 heart transplants per year on children of all ages and complexity. Pioneering research and clinical work have positioned it as a world leader for ABO incompatible and highly sensitized transplantation with ongoing preclinical and translational research in this area. Since the early 2000s a trailblazing ventricular assist device program supported management of infants and children in advanced heart failure. Since 2014 a dedicated Pediatric Heart Function and Cardiomyopathy Program has evolved which has substantially expanded in both inpatient and outpatient services. The services are responsible for a spectrum of patients from clinical screening to those in advanced heart failure. The program offers many services including a home milrinone program, genetic counseling and ventricular assist device planning and management. We are part of the ACTION Network, Pedimacs and the Canadian Heart Failure Alliance. The chosen candidate will join a team of 4 other cardiologists, 2 nurse practitioners and 3 (1.5 FTE) transplant coordinators. As we build our team, the Department of Pediatrics recognizes that our people are and will continue to be our greatest strength. We celebrate creativity, diversity, perseverance and a collaborative spirit.
