Position Description/General Summary:

The Assistant Director (AD) for Curriculum and Instruction is primarily responsible for the oversight of CELOP full-time (9) and part-time (10) faculty and the quality of the academic experience of students at CELOP. This includes recruitment, supervision, review and development of CELOP’s full-time and part-time faculty; ensuring that the curriculum is of a high quality, aligns with CEA standards, and is relevant to student needs; and designing new curricula, curricular components, and programs as needed. The AD teaches 5 – 10 hours per week and serves as a member of the CELOP leadership team, supporting the Managing Director in identifying and achieving strategic goals, while representing the CELOP academic program to BU and external constituents. The AD reports to the Managing Director.

Key Responsibilities/Essential Job Functions:

  • Leads faculty in maintaining and improving academic program quality, developing and implementing new programs and initiatives. Leads on annual professional development initiatives for faculty, staying current with relevant theory, research, and practice. Manages and supports faculty committees, monthly faculty meetings, and in collaboration with the Assistant Director, Academic Operations, provides support with semester start-up meetings for faculty. Responsible for the overall recruitment, orientation, supervision and evaluation of full-time and part-time faculty. (25%)
  • Collaborates closely with the Assistant Director, Academic Operations on the development of teacher schedules; CEA accreditation process; management of and compliance with BU’s Collective Bargaining Agreement; management of student and faculty inquiries/concerns; and the establishment of policies and procedures for CELOP’s students and faculty. (20%)
  • Ensures that CELOP academic programs are compliant with accreditation standards and good practices in the field and implements curricular modifications when necessary. Oversees curriculum and works with faculty to ensure that the curriculum is relevant to student needs, and that valid and reliable student assessment measures are implemented, reviewed and evaluated. (15%)
  • Teaches 5-10 hours per week in either CELOP’s standard program and/or special programs including lesson plan development, classroom management, grading of assignments and administration of assessments. (25%)
  • Works with admissions and recruitment staff to ensure that CELOP programs are represented completely and accurately in recruitment materials. Works with Associate Director, Business Development on the development of proposals and program design when needed. (10%)
  • Collaborates with the administrative leadership team in devising and implementing the CELOP strategic plan, annual CEA review plans and reaccreditation efforts. (5%)

Required Skills

A cover letter is required for consideration.

  • A Master’s degree in a relevant area such as TESOL, Language Education, or Applied Linguistics required. Additionally, a doctoral degree in one of these fields or in International Education or Educational Leadership is preferred. 
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in a faculty and curriculum leadership role, preferably in a university- based intensive English program and minimum of 5 years teaching experience in post-secondary English language programs, with demonstrated teaching excellence. Some experience teaching abroad preferred.
  • Record of ongoing professional development and contributions to the field of English language teaching.
  • Knowledge of language teaching methods and techniques, educational and pedagogical principles, sociological and psycholinguistic contexts of language learning, second language curriculum, assessment, acquisition theory and research, English language acquisition, teaching materials, educational technology, English language program accreditation.
  • Demonstrated ability with Microsoft Office and database use preferred. 
  • Fluency in English and knowledge of at least one foreign language and familiarity with/empathy for individuals from different cultural backgrounds.
  • High level of organization and attention to detail combined with ability to see the big picture.
  • Collegiality, collaboration, and commitment to participatory leadership required.
  • Assertiveness in enforcing program policies.
  • Ability to work under pressure and overtime when needed and adapt to changing priorities. 
  • Willingness to continue learning.
  • High level of professionalism and positive attitude required.
