Job Category: Faculty – Clinical

Faculty/Division: Temerty Faculty of Medicine

Department: Dept of Surgery

Hospital Affiliation: Sunnybrook Health Science Centre

Campus: St. George (Downtown Toronto)

Description:

The Division of Spine Surgery, Department of Surgery, Holland Bone and Joint Program at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre is inviting applications for a mid-career full-time faculty spine surgeon-scientist with fellowship training covering spine trauma, spine oncology and spine degenerative conditions. The effective date of this appointment is flexible, tentatively aiming for October 1, 2024. Rolling interviews will be conducted based on the number of applicants until the position is filled. Should a successful candidate not be identified, the position will be closed by September 1, 2024.

The successful candidate should have a strong track-record of research productivity and clinical training with a focus on spine trauma, spine oncology, and spine degenerative conditions. It is expected that the candidate will establish an academic surgical practice and focus most of their clinical activity on spine oncology and spine trauma, with the remaining focused on elective spine degenerative surgery. Please note that a major deformity practice is currently not in line with the clinical priorities of the institution. In keeping with the academic focus of the Division and the Department of Surgery, the recruit will commit at least 50% of their time to formal academic activities.

The successful candidate should have graduate level training in a relevant area of research that is aligned with Sunnybrook Research Institute’s programs or platforms in evaluative clinical sciences, biological sciences or the physical sciences (https://sunnybrook.ca/research/). Preference will be given to candidates with Master or PhD-level training. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a research profile and contribute to the academic mission of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Holland Bone and Joint Program, Division of Spine Surgery, Department of Surgery, and Sunnybrook Research Institute. Opportunities to be cross appointed to the Department of Orthopedics or Department of Neurosurgery will be considered based on the candidate’s training. Academic expertise in conducting clinical trials, health services research, quality improvement, education research, and translational ‘bench-to-clinic’ discovery research will be strongly considered. As a member of the Department of Surgery and the University of Toronto, the candidate is expected to participate in education of learners at all levels. Evidence of excellence in teaching and research is required.

The successful candidate will join the hospital’s Division of Spine Surgery. The appropriate mid-career candidate for this position needs to be eligible for hospital appointment as Active Staff, as well as for a university appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, or Associate Professor at the University of Toronto and be eligible for certification with the Royal College of Physicians, Surgeons of Canada, or hold international equivalent, and be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. The candidate must also be eligible for appointment as an Associate Scientist or Scientist in Sunnybrook Research Institute.

Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre is one of Canada’s largest hospitals and a leader in clinical and research activities. Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre is a fully affiliated academic health sciences facility of the University of Toronto and home to one of the University’s three academies for undergraduate education. Sunnybrook has an international reputation for clinical excellence in research and is an acknowledged academic leader. The Sunnybrook Research Institute hosts well established programs in basic, applied and clinical research, occupying over 250,000 square feet of state-of-the-art infrastructure with annual peer reviewed grants of $100 million dollars.

The hospital Division of Spine Surgery performs over 1000 elective spine cases annually. As one of the largest trauma hospitals in Canada, ~ 2000 ‘code trauma’ patients are managed through our Emergency Department annually. The hospital’s Holland Bone and Joint Program remains integral to Sunnybrook’s ecosystem supporting its Trauma activity, Cancer Program, and provides comprehensive orthopaedic care for patients with degenerative and inflammatory bone and joint conditions.

Annual salary will be between the range of $250,000 – $350,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience. This estimate is based on fee for service billings. Please submit a letter of intent, curriculum vitae to and the name of three referees by July 30, 2023 to:
