Job Summary:

Provides high-quality clinical care to pediatric patients in Emergency Department / Urgent Care setting, as well as supporting the Child Protection Team (CPT) at Childrens Hospital Colorado, Colorado Springs. CPT work includes ambulatory clinics seeing new and established patients, while also performing consultative services in the emergency department and inpatient unit setting. This role will communicate with and educate patients, caregivers, human services, law enforcement, and other agencies involved with Child Protection Team cases.

Key Responsibilities:

The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:  

Clinical Effort – Pediatric Emergency Medicine (0.45 FTE):

  • Expectation to maintain 0.45 cFTE (clinical effort). Clinical Practitioners at 0.45 cFTE will be expected to provide coverage for 620 hours annually (equivalent of 62, 10-hour shifts). All clinical hours obligations are negotiable with the Section Head at any time. This coverage will consist of direct patient care at Children’s Hospital Colorado-Colorado Springs. Coverage will include:
    • Pediatric emergency and urgent care
    • Pediatric Observation Unit medicine
    • Jeopardy shifts (an internal physician coverage system for unanticipated absence)
  • Practitioner must maintain active medical staff privileges at all other facilities where ED or urgent care services are provided by the Children’s Hospital Colorado NOC unless a site is specifically excluded by mutual agreement by the practitioner and the medical director of the Children’s Hospital Colorado NOC. 
  • Expectation to attend at least 75% of the official Section of Emergency Medicine required monthly meetings: Joint Section Meeting and Operational Updates.
  • Requirement to participate in Children’s Hospital Colorado Main OR with anesthesiology one time per year to maintain airway skills as well as other technical seminars as deemed by the section and/or practice site in conjunction with input from the medical director. 

Clinical Effort – KEMPE – Child Protection Team (0.40 FTE):

  • Provide direct patient care in support of the Children’s Hospital Colorado-Colorado Spring Child Protection Team in the form of consultative service in the emergency department and inpatient unit setting. Provide direct patient care in support of the Children’s Hospital Colorado-Colorado Spring Child Protection Team in the form of new and establish patient visits in the ambulatory/outpatient setting. Due to the low ambulatory volume the hours include combined consultation and outpatient activities and total 16 hours per week.
  • Communicate with and educate patients, caregivers, human services, law enforcement, and other agencies involved with Child Protection Team cases.

Academic (0.15 FTE):

  • Provide 0.15 FTE clinical relief for an academic position.
  • Expectation to generate scholarly products that will support your promotion to Associate Professor.
  • As a member of the Section of Emergency Medicine, you will be expected to participate in academic programs within the Section, in accordance with our educational mission.  This will include, but is not limited to:
    • Section Academic Conference.
    • Section Continuing Medical Education Conference
    • PEM fellow education days

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:  

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.  

  • MD or DO degree.
  • Full, unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Colorado
  • Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) registration.
  • Eligibility to obtain medical liability insurance.
  • Board certified in Child Abuse Pediatrics and Peds Emergency Medicine 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with electronic medical records, preferably EPIC.
  • Willingness to work with challenging clinical situations.
  • Expertise and comfort in management of complex child maltreatment cases
  • Evidence of research, clinical, or educational scholarship commensurate with a career goal of progressive leadership in the field of child abuse pediatrics
  • Past experience working in a collaborative multidisciplinary setting. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge

o   Advanced understanding of pediatric disease and injury patterns

o   Understanding of and familiarity with resources to assist in making clinical decisions and diagnosis.

  • Skills

o   Use of electronic medical record (EPIC)

o   Teaching of medical learners

o   Effectively and respectfully field calls from referring physicians to facilitate referral to site appropriate for presenting problem/service requested and transport to site.

  • Technical skills

o   Interpretation of plain radiographs

o   Foreign body removal

o   Laceration repair, including vermillion border and nail bed repair (some advanced techniques can be learned on job)

o   Incision and drainage

o   Reduction of minor digit fractures or joint dislocations (can be learned on job)

o   Nerve blocks

o   Lumbar puncture

o   IV fluid management of electrolyte and endocrine derangements

o   Acute respiratory care

o   Intubation (ongoing yearly skills training mandatory)

o   Pediatric resuscitation (must maintain PALS certification and complete required annual mock resuscitations)

o   Procedural Sedation (do not need to hold previous credentials but must obtain credentialing at CHCO.  Process in place for education and assisting with obtaining credentials.)

  • Abilities

o   Work efficiently in a fast paced, acute care environment for 8-12 hours at a time.

o   Promote teamwork amongst nurses, techs, learners and colleagues

o   Strong communication and interpersonal skills

o   Work a mix of days, evening, overnights, weekend and holiday shifts

Anticipated Salary Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range ) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE:

$227,000.

The above salary range (or hiring range ) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation unless it is non-exempt.
