Description
The Faculty of Science at the University of Calgary invites applications for a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor (Research and Teaching) in Computer Science position with a focus on Critical Infrastructure and Systems in Data Science.
Description of Expectations
The candidate must possess a PhD in Computer Science or a related discipline and display potential for leading a high-impact research program. Candidates who are near completion of their program will also be considered. Preference will be given to candidates with relevant experience in Data Science and a primary focus and interest in large-scale data-intensive systems and infrastructure, such as one or more of the following areas:
• Data and information management
• Large-scale and applied data mining and analytics
• Large scale and applied data integration and pipelines
• Cloud, edge, and mobile computing for large-scale data
• Distributed computing and storage for large-scale data
• Networking for large-scale data
Research expectations:
The candidate must have strong interests in supporting the Department of Computer Science’s research initiatives and training programs. The candidate is expected to contribute to the University of Calgary’s Ahead of Tomorrow strategic plan to promote transdisciplinary scholarship and innovation and empower our students and communities to tackle society’s big problems.
Teaching expectations:
The successful candidate will play an important role in teaching and research supervision of undergraduate and graduate students. Evidence of (potential for) excellence and growth in these areas is an asset. The successful candidate must possess the interest and ability to teach a variety of graduate and undergraduate courses in computer science and especially topics related to Critical Infrastructure and Systems in Data Science, in order to support teaching in our undergraduate and graduate programs. We offer both in-person and virtual sections of many of our undergraduate courses. Teaching assignments of faculty members is a collaborative process where we aim to balance the needs of individual faculty members and the needs of students.
Service Expectations:
Finally, the candidate should provide evidence of collegiality within their organization and commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI). They will be expected to fully engage in departmental and university service at the University of Calgary and work effectively with people from diverse communities and cultures.
Description of Work Environment
Successful applicants will become faculty members in the Department of Computer Science. The Department offers a variety of programs:
• BSc in Computer Science
• BSc in Data Science
• MSc and PhD in Computer Science
• MSc and PhD in Computational Media Design
• Professional certificates and Master in Data Science and Analytics
• Professional certificates and Master in Information Security and Privacy.
We are also developing an on-line pathway for our BSc in Computer Science. Successful applicants will primarily contribute to the data science components of the Department’s programs, but will also have the opportunity to contribute to other components and other programs offered by the Department and Faculty.
The Department of Computer Science is in the Faculty of Science.
