Assistant Professor in Social Work – Tenure-Track

The Department of Social Science at the University of New Brunswick in Saint John invites applications for a tenure-track position in Social Work. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor. The successful candidate should have expertise in one of the following fields, addictions and mental health, child welfare, (dis)ability studies, anti-black racism, Francophone Canadian perspectives, rural social work, research methods, direct practice, and/or multi-disciplinary collaboration. An ability to teach indigenous perspectives on social work will be considered a particular asset. The appointment will begin on July 1, 2025 and is subject to budgetary approval.

Candidates should have a BSW and/or MSW (or related field) and PhD in Social Work or a related field (or near completion). Candidates should also have 2+ years of social work practice (or relevant lived experience) and eligibility to register with the NBASW. If you are considering this position and self-identify as Indigenous with an active connection to an Indigenous community or communities in Canada and a significant social work practice resume, teaching experience, and lived experience, you are encouraged to apply, even in the absence of a PhD.

• Knowledge and experience of decolonialization, equity, and intersectionality in practice and education.
• A determination to uphold the commitment to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion at UNBSJ.
• Knowledge of the unique experiences of Canadian Indigenous peoples and the impact that social work practice has had and will have on these communities.
• Previous experience with experiential learning.
• Knowledge of the social service and community development network in New Brunswick.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach a full course load of five undergraduate courses in social work in an academic year. The successful candidate will have input into future development of the social work curriculum and may be able to develop courses in their specific area of expertise. The successful candidate will be expected to be engaged in a program of research, scholarly, or creative activity within their area of expertise.
This position is housed within an interdisciplinary department that includes Social Work, Sociology, Communication Studies, and Education. The Bachelor of Social Work program offers a generalist social work education. The first intake of students started in September 2024.
The salary range and fringe benefits for this position are defined in the Association of University of New Brunswick Teachers (AUNBT) 2022-2025 Collective Agreement sections 35 and 36B.
