The Department of English in the College of Arts, Languages & Letters at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa invites applicants for a 9-month, tenure-track, full-time assistant professorship in Creative Writing, to begin Fall 2025, pending availability of funds.

The University of Hawaii at Manoa is a leading institution for scholarship and creative work focused on Hawaii, Asia, and Oceania and is committed to being a Native Hawaiian Place of Learning. The fundamental mission of the Department of English is to develop students’ critical reading, writing, and creative skills through the study of various literatures in the English language, composition and rhetoric, and creative writing, with a particular emphasis on the cultural diversity of our location in the Pacific. Our faculty members are committed to quality research and scholarship, generous public service, and exemplary teaching at the BA, MA, and PhD levels. We are looking for a talented creative writer working primarily in poetry who will teach Creative Writing classes and advise students at the undergraduate and graduate levels, maintain an active publishing profile, and support the department’s mission through engaged service. Continuous until filled.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teach all levels of undergraduate, MA-, and PhD- courses in Creative Writing (Poetry), and other courses based on the needs of the department;
  • Advise, supervise, and mentor graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Maintain an active professional practice in area(s) of specialization;
  • Participate in graduate committees;
  • Participate in departmental and university service;
  • Other duties as assigned by the Chair.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. MFA, PhD, or equivalent degree in English, Creative Writing (Poetry), or a closely related field from a college or university of recognized standing. ABDs will be considered, provided all degree requirements completed by August 2025;
  2. A minimum of one book under contract from a nationally recognized press;
  3. Demonstrated experience in teaching and service;
  4. Ability to develop and teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels;
  5. Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially with students, faculty, staff, and administration.

Desirable Qualifications:

  1. Experience in teaching creative writing workshop;
  2. Demonstrated experience in a secondary creative writing genre such as creative nonfiction, hybrid and/or multilingual forms, or literary translation;
  3. Teaching ability and research in more than one genre and creative writing pedagogy;
  4. Experience in literary journal and/or small press editing/publishing;
  5. Ability to teach classes in literature;
  6. Creative work and/or teaching interest in one or more of the following areas: Filipinx or Filipinx American literatures; Native American/First Nations literatures; literatures of the Black Diaspora; US Latinx literatures; Caribbean literatures; literatures of the Pacific;
  7. Demonstrated ability to support the university’s mission of diversity, equity and inclusion.
