Summary of Job Duties:

The Department of HSSP at the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith, invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Sociology to start in August 2024. This is a standard nine-month faculty, non-tenure track appointment. Our department is multidisciplinary and seeks an applicant with an interest in working with others outside their own field of specialization. The position reports to the Department Chair of History, Social Sciences, Philosophy.

Qualifications:

Required Education and/or Work Experience: Ph.D. in Sociology, or ABD with firm defense date considered, from an accredited institution of higher education.

Preferred Education and/or Work Experience: Five-five years of college-level teaching experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

To perform the job successfully, the following competencies are required for the essential functions of this position:

  • Applicants should have familiarity with Workday and fluency in Blackboard.
  • Ability to utilize technology in the classroom and online course modules.
  • Demonstrated abilities in effective pedagogical practices.
  • Knowledge of and skills in student focused learning and teaching styles.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for teaching undergraduate courses, both online and in the classroom. Course load is 24 hours per academic year, or 12 hours per semester.
  • Teaching would include the General Education courses of Introduction to Diversity Studies and Introduction to Sociology, and in subject areas related to race, gender, family, death, dying, aging, and ability.
  • Evaluate progress of students concerning educational matters and grade student work.
  • Assessment of learning outcomes and student progress
  • Service to department, college, and University, including committees and assessments.
  • Participating in departmental decision-making, and performing other departmental, college, and university service.
  • Recruitment and retention of students.
  • Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics.
  • Maintain an active program of personal scholarly advancement, including appropriate national and regional presentations and publication.
  • Responsible for maintaining a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner to foster teamwork and by providing leadership to subordinates.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Salary Information:

$50,000-52,000/year, commensurate with education and experience
