THE COLLEGE FOR EDUCATION AND ENGAGED LEARNING AND THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATIONS

Montclair is home to the nationally ranked College for Education and Engaged Learning (CEEL). CEEL was established in July 2023 after the reorganization of the former College of Education and Human Services. Education is at the heart of Montclair, whose institutional history is rooted as a normal school. One hundred and sixteen years later, CEEL carries the torch of Montclair’s commitment to education, and is comprised of three academic departments and six community-serving centers that serve more than 600 undergraduate and over 1,000 graduate students.

The Department of Educational Foundations (EDFD) focuses on: (a) the analysis and critique of educational forms, practices and theories from philosophical, historical, social, political, psychological and economic perspectives; (b) education as a means to realizing a more just and democratic society; and (c) the promotion and development of critical and creative thinking in educational contexts.

EDFD faculty teach in a robust undergraduate major, with nearly 650 students in the program. Our research methodology and assessment courses are offered to students in a number of the University’s master’s degree and doctoral programs. EDFD delivers a variety of courses designed to prepare public and private school educators, administrators, community educators, and policymakers to meet the educational demands of our diverse and information-rich society. Along with the charge to serve professional and pre-professional educators, the department seeks to develop in students from all disciplines a sophisticated understanding of the relationship between education and culture, as well as acquire the tools of inquiry that support sound decision-making in a variety of contexts.
